It was cold outside. But I couldn't do anything about it, it's not like Padma and I have anywhere to go, other than underneath this bridge. "You can have your jacket back, I don't need it" she looked at me with pity. "No, I-I'm fine.. you are lying. You are freezing cold, and you need the warmth more than I do" I replied as she shrugged.
I stared out at the skyline, hoping to find some beauty, or happiness in this city. Reno is just like everywhere else we have 'stayed'. The same faces, same people, same trouble. Padma and I left home about two years ago I'm guessing. It seems like longer. We had to leave New York State to get away from our parents, it's not like they miss us anyway.
The old town was where I was born and raised, but that's not necessarily a good thing, taken how we were brought up. I had a rough childhood, and I don't want Padma to go through the same things that I went through with our parents. So we left. She was six when we left,meaning she is eight now. I was 17, in need of an escape, other than Dad's cheap alcohol and any marijuana or cocaine I could find downtown, and that's not the kind of environment Padma deserves to be in. She should be away from me, with some loving family in Georgia or something. But in that way I'm greedy, because I need her too.
"The next time we go shopping, I'll buy yo-" I was interrupted "No! You need to start taking care of yourself! The next time we go shopping, I'm buying YOU a blanket." she stared at me with her forehead wrinkled, as if she was actually mad. It's hard to take an eight year old seriously.
"Sorry, but you are my responsibility. I'm worrying about you today, I'll worry about myself next week." I shivered, moving closer to her if that is even possible. I sat her onto my lap, and wrapped my arms around her frail body and soon fell asleep.

Short chapter I know, but hello everyone! I don't really know what my schedule is going to be, I've been busy with school and I can never keep up with my books, so I don't know how long this is going to last.
