"Are you Sam?", she asked. I was torn whether to say yes or just lie and leave.

"U-um yeah", I finally choked out. Damn my stuttering.

"Wow, I seriously feel bad for Mike now", she said with a smirk.

"What's that supposed to mean?", I asked.

"Sweetheart, have you seen yourself? Mike has to work with.....that.", she waved her hands around as if to mention her distaste for me. I suddenly felt so self-conscious. What was I thinking even coming tonight? This idea was stupid, this party was stupid, and more inportantly I was stupid. I was broken out of my train of thought when Trista started to speak again.

"Look 'sweetheart', I'm just trying to help you. Mike is so out of your league anyway. So, just back off, because this can get ugly, and I can ruin you", she said with the fakest smile I have ever seen. Her words stung, and I felt my face heating up and my eyes get glassy. I wanted to slap her so badly for making me feel like this.

Why am i taking this? Who the fuck did she think she was talking to me like I was below her? No, thats it, no more!

"Listen, sweet heart, I'm the one who feels bad for Mike, he has to deal with someone like you every day. You're just pissed because you know you're losing Mike. You know he doesn't like you anymore. Admit it, you're just scared he will choose me. ", I said with a smirk. Who the fuck was this? Where was all this coming from?

"Oh really? Someone like me? That's cute, well at least Mike didn't date me for a bet", she said yelling the last part loud enough for everyone to hear. Everything stopped. Throughout the room I heard gasps and felt all eyes on me. She had a satisfied smile on her face. Crap, where was my confidence when I needed it most?

"Trista, s-stop.", I said shutting my eyes. Maybe if I just count to three she will disappear and this will be a dream. Yeah. 1.....2......3. Damn, was worth the shot.

I stared back at Trista, who had the biggest smirk on this planet.

"I feel bad for you Sam, someone as smart as you should really take a hint", she said.

"Leave Mike Alone!", she yelled as she slapped me, but she didn't stop there. I felt someone sweep their feet from under mine. By body collapsed on the floor with a thud. She kicked me repeatedly and each time hurt more than the last.

"STOP! Please stop!", I screamed shrilly. There was no stopping the tears. I felt them burn my face as I layed there, helpless.

Mike ran into the house and saw Trista.

"Trista! What the hell are you doing?!?", he yelled.

"Telling her to fuck off!", she yelled furiously, I could practically see the fire in her eyes.

"Leave her alone Trista! Don't blame her for something you broke! We're done! Over!", he yelled.

"Y-you can't do that!", she yelled surprised.

"I just did. Get out and don't come back.", he said calmly.

Trista looked as if she was going to explode, but she simply crossed her arms and stormed off. Everyone went back to what they were doing as if nothing had even happened.

I layed on the floor, I felt so weak, and I could feel the bruises developing where Trista had kicked me. I tried to push myself up, but I couldn't find the strength. then I felt two hands grab me and pull me up. It was Mike. I still couldn't fully stand up and I almost fell again, but Mike caught me and our eyes met.

"I'm so sorry Sam, I didnt know she would do that", he said apologetically, his eyes turning a lighter shade of blue.

"It's okay, Mike. It wasn't your fault", I choked out.

"But it was, for being with the wrong girl", he said. His eyes sparkling.

He pulled me close and hugged me. His height kind of towering over me. I could hear his heart beating fast. I liked this. When we pulled away he looked down at me and smiled. He leaned in closer to my face and I did as well. Our lips inched closer and closer together until I realized what was happening. Right before our lips could touch, I stopped.

"I'm s-sorry. I can't", I whispered as I scurried away pushing through the flood of people. I ran outside and saw a swing. I sat down and looked at my hands. I felt the hot tears suddenly cascade down my face. I like Mike, I really like him, but after the whole thing with Sean I didn't know if I would be able to trust him. More tears started to fall down my face as I sat there in the cold.
