Dani:
A few days later, Charlotte and I attend Casey Kline's Halloween bash. It's not really Halloween until tomorrow, however.
Charlotte is exquisitely dressed; sleek, pink leotard-clad with her wavy hair pulled back into a tight bun. She is more excited about attending the party opposed to celebrating Halloween, as where I was thrilled about Halloween. The Sumners were not allowed to dress up for Halloween until we were fourteen, and by the time I was fourteen, it seemed bittersweet. I'd gone all out, looking the part of a very sexy lumberjack.
Being at the party had taken much encouragement from a certain ballerina. True evidence of how much Charlotte had me wrapped around her finger.
"You were at Eve's party." She countered.
True, I had been. It was not because I was particularly impressed with Eve's presence at our door that morning before her party, telling me it would be cool if I could swing by. It's not like we were friends. When I found out this August that Heather and my new neighbor was the ditzy airhead from my Psychics class, I had wanted to move.
It wasn't just the fact that we weren't friends though. College parties weren't my priority. Last year, I'd gotten my fill. Many drunken nights, the end result always being waking up in a bed of someone I didn't know or care about.
To be honest, I'd been enthusiastic to go to Eve's party that night because I'd hoped I'd run into her newest fuckbuddy - Charlotte. (Funny, she had ran into me instead.) I'd seen her plenty around campus and coming and going from Eve's. I knew also that Eve had something going on with Jared Petrowski, that kid with the Skrillex haircut. I wanted to meet Charlotte more than I wanted to admit and the fact that it turned out the way It did made up for every one of my failed relationships.
Despite the unaccommodating size of the apartment, there sure were a ton of college students crammed into it.
People who I hadn't seen since last year. Some of my current classmates. Plenty of people I didn't even recognize."I'm so glad you came with me, Dani." Charlotte purred.
I put my arm around her shoulder and looked into her eyes. "Anything to please the princess."
Twenty minutes later, Charlotte went off to talk to some girl she knew while I was chatting with Ericksen Calloway. A former classmate of mine. We had both taken Intro to Library Studies with Professor Brodmann.
"It's crazy not being the new kids anymore, huh?" He said.
Nodding I replied, "Dude, definitely. Plus the living situation is a bit more ideal."
Laughing, Ericksen tells me, "Well, my roommate likes to set the kitchen on fire because he tries to bake bread after he does a million bong hits. But I get what you mean."
He's colored his hair since I've seen him last. It's a turquoise color. And it's longer. He keeps flipping his bangs out of his eyes while he talks.
I grin. "Rough, man. I'm rooming with Heather again. You should drop by sometime. We can hangout and catch up."
"Totally. Here, let me put my number in your phone." I do.
A girl that he knows with a bunch of facial piercings walks by and we bid each other farewell.
"I'll call you for sure." He tells me over his shoulder.
I look over to see Charlotte still in the corner talking, appearing very animated. She's drunk, obviously. The way she rocks back and forth gives me the clue.
I was about to go over there to check on her when I was shoulder checked by Eve Williams dressed up in a witch getup. How fitting for her.
"Excuse you." I hissed pointedly.
