| PROLOGUE PART ONE

Hope's Peak Academy.

The dream school of any student. The haven for the few elite individuals who are dedicated and blessed. In short, the gateway to an extremely successful career path.

I'm standing in front of this very academy.

Who knew that me, an average student, could be enrolled into such a school? I was certainly lucky.

I look down at the paper in my hands, reading it over once more.

Dear Emil Steilsson,

We selected one average student via lottery. For winning, we acknowledge your 'Super High School-Level Luck' and wish to invite you to our academy. Included is a map to Hope's Peak should you choose to enroll.

It's not the most informative letter I've ever received, but that doesn't really matter. What's important is that I'm here, so I have to make the most of it.

And with one last look behind me towards the outside world, I take my first step onto campus.

But something's wrong. The school is swirling before my eyes, fading in and out. What is this?

Everything goes dark. Nothing is visible in the slightest.

Am I dreaming?

I have a bad feeling about my luck.

My eyes fly open and are met with a confusing sight. Are those... desks?

The side of my face is pressed against a surface, and I straighten up, wanting my bearings back.

There are, in fact, desks. I'm in a classroom, seated in one of said desks.

From initial glance, it seems like any ordinary empty classroom. But then I notice a security camera. And...

"Iron plates?" I whisper in confusion, looking at the walls covered in them. My voice is extremely hoarse, and I wonder if there's water anywhere.

I assuming this is Hope's Peak, so there must be a cafeteria or even a water fountain somewhere around here. But how do I get out of this room?

I try removing a plate from the wall, but all that ends up doing is making my hands red.

There's also a door that I try opening, but it won't budge at all.

"What the heck is going on?" I say quietly. How did I go from being at the school gates to being imprisoned in a strange classroom? Panic slowly rises in my throat, and I almost scream.

Then I spot a piece of paper.

There's a drawing on it, presumably of the academy. In messy writing, someone has scrawled out,

Welcome to School. A new semester has just begun. Since you're starting new lives, this school will be your new world.

Gather in the gym at eight for the welcoming ceremony.

Welcoming ceremony? 8:00?

I search the room for a clock and find one, hanging high on the wall.
