| CHAPTER ONE

The Multi-Media Room is dim, and it's filled with a few rows of computers on long tables. Most of the others have taken seats in front of said computers, so Kiku and I follow suit.

Once the remainder of the class has filed in, Monkuma repeats his last statement 'Welcome to a little class I like to call Motivation 101.'

"Sounds ominous," a boy in front of me mutters.

Super Duper High School Level Songwriter Milen Hinov

"Ominous? No!" the principal protests. "It's fun, really! Alright, so in order to pass this class, all you have to do is insert the CD in front of you into the computer and then enter your first and last names. Simple! Don't forget to watch the whole video."

I pick up the CD and look it over. There isn't any title on it, so I don't know what it is. I put it into the computer and enter my name when directed to. Directions on the screen instruct me to also wear the headphones located in a drawer under the table, which I hadn't noticed before.

Finally, I hit enter and my screen fades black for a few seconds.

And it fades back into a picture of my family. My mom, my dad, and my pet bird.

A video starts playing. My parents are smiling widely at the camera. "Hello, Emil! How's your new school going? We all miss you so much," mom says happily, clasping her hands together.

"We're also proud of you. I'm sure your grades are going to be great by the time we see you again," adds dad. My bird chirps, wanting to say something as well, I guess.

"Just remember to eat your–"

Mom's voice is cut off by a high pitched static sound. I jump and almost take off my headphones before remembering what Monokuma said.

The audio is quiet again, anyways. But the new scene...

The chairs my parents were sitting in just a few seconds ago are completely destroyed. One is missing a leg, and they're both covered in deep gashes. The bird cage is on its side, the door hanging open on one hinge. Feathers litter the floor.

I put my hand over my mouth, feeling sick. What happened? Where did my family go?

The window behind the ruined chairs is open. Our lacy white curtains are waving listlessly in the slight breeze, torn and blood-stained.

At least, I think it's blood. The thought makes me want to cry, and I clench my hand under the table.

Finally, the screen goes black, and the video is over. I take off my headphones in disbelief and close my eyes for a brief moment. That can't be real. Like Monokuma said, it's just motivation. He just wants us to try and get away with murder to escape and check on our family. To make sure they're alive. That's all.

I'm ashamed to admit that it's tempting. I would never follow through with it, but still.

Blood is thicker than water, right?

I sigh and look around at everyone else. A few are still watching their videos, a few are also surveying the room, and one is standing up.

Super Duper High School Level Crafter Berwald Oxenstierna

He isn't doing anything, just standing there and staring at the principal, who's been watching us and smiling evilly this whole time.

A smaller boy stands up as well and tugs on his arm. "Come on, Berwald, sit down."

Super Duper High School Level Speaker Tino Väinämöinen

Berwald sits down without a word.

By now, I'm pretty sure everyone else has finished their videos. I only have time to share a glance with Kiku before Monokuma starts laughing. He almost falls over, he's laughing so hard.

"How was that motivation?" he chokes out. I think, if he were human, his face would be bright red right now.

"Shitty," says Gilbert from somewhere across the room. I can't see him, but that pissed-off tone is unique to him.

I hear him yelp, and can only imagine what happened. Monokumajirou seems amused by the insult.

"Now that I've treated you to your precious videos, I hope to have a murder tonight. I'm guessing none of you want to know what will happen if I don't?"

I fight the urge to roll my eyes. This is a terrible situation to be in, and there's no time to start acting up.

"Alright, kiddos, you're free to go! Do whatever you want, just don't stay out past curfew!"

I bolt out of my chair and hurry out after saying goodbye to Kiku. On the way, I accidentally bump into a dark haired guy with striking green eyes.

Super Duper High School Level Philosopher Heracles Karpusi

"Oh, I'm sorry," I say before continuing, not waiting for any answers.

I'm not sure where I'm going, but as long as it's away from that horrible principal, I'm happy.

Hours later, I finally retreat to my room for some sleep. I have no clue what's going to happen tomorrow. I can only wait and find out.

After checking that my door is firmly locked, I get into my bed. I've quickly learned to deal with the constant paranoia of sleeping in this place, and can fall asleep with hardly any trouble.

My eyes close, and day three in Hope's Peak High School ends.

~~~~
Unfortunately, my paranoia returns full force the next day.
I walked down to the cafeteria at 7:30 AM. About ten other students were already there. We waited until 8:00 AM, eating breakfast and conversing in solemn tones.
By then, we had gotten worried. Two people still weren't accounted for, an hour after the curfew ended.
So now we're all taking a trip to the dorm hallway to check on them.
First, we stop at Heracles's room. Roderich knocks on his door, and we hold our breath.
He answers a few moments later. "What are you all doing here?" he asks, sounding groggy.
"It's 8:00 AM. We got worried about your whereabouts, and came to check that you were fine. Sorry if we woke you," Roderich says.
"Okay." Heracles steps back into his room and closes the door. He's probably gone back to sleep.
"Who's the other missing one?" asks Elizabeta as we all move down the hallway.
"Arthur," answers Francis Bonnefoy.
This time, he's the one who knocks on the door.
We wait for what seems like ages. No one comes to the door. Francis knocks again. Still nothing.
He looks back at us questioningly. "Should we go look for him?"
"That won't be necessary."
