For the first minute or so, we just stood and stared at each other, each of us daring the other to back down. I though the silence would last forever, but then she smirked and broke it.
"You're a stubborn one I see. Good. You seem very strong." I didn't respond, just kept giving her a deadpan stare.
"Leilah... an interesting name. It means Dark, or Dark Beauty. Fitting for you I think," She walked to her desk and sits down. "Sit." I slowly lower myself into the chair in front of her desk, my eyes never leaving her.
"What do you and Marcus know that you aren't telling me?" I asked. Her eyebrows raised a fraction of an inch.
"Observing and smart as well. You'll do well here," she stared at me.
"Would you like me to repeat the question?" I inquired in a dry tone. For the first time since I walked into this building, her eyes flash with anger.
"Witty too. Very well. You are... different from the other children of the Darkness," She answered, leaning forward, her hands clasped together as if in prayer.
"How so?" I asked.
"Most of your sister's and brothers wake up at a much younger age. Usually they don't have a huge reason to be needed. Mainly we need another warrior, another worker, another family member, another friend. Except for for the exceptionally powerful ones. They wake up when the world is in dire need of them, usually when we are at war."
"Why do they only wake up then? Wouldn't it be better to have them trained before sending them to battle?" I questioned.
"No. When they wake, they wake with all the knowledge they need in their head. And they can't wake up sooner. They are so powerful that if they woke up before they were matured, it would wreak havoc. Teaching average Children of Darkness to control their powers and skills is hard enough, but someone who is 10 or 20 times more powerful? They could explode the entire world to pieces with just one temper tantrum," She paused to let that sink in.
"And I am one of those Children," I stated, mind racing with all the information I just processed.
"Yes," She confirmed.
"When I woke up, I wondered what I was needed for. Now that I have this information, I need to know- who are we at war with, and why are we fighting them?" I asked.
"First you must know that there is one other group of children as well. The Sons and Daughters of the Light. Once, every couple decades, some exceptionally powerful children are born. Pure Children of the Darkness," she said, nodding at me, "Pure Children of the Light, and once in a while, a mixture of both."
She sat up straighter as she said this. My mind clicked and suddenly her contrasting appearance of light and dark make sense.
"You," I said.
"Me," She agreed. "But there was one other who was born in the same decade as me. His name was Darius D'Varco and he was said to be the strongest Child of the Light and Darkness. He was two years older than me, but we woke up at the same time. A war was upon us when there was a powerful Son of Darkness who wanted to control all the Sons and Daughters. Darius and I fought battles together, and we were friends, then lovers. Then there was another child born. A girl who was then said to be even stronger than Darius, and he got jealous, and afraid of how this girl would affect his future. One night, he crept into her nursery and killed her," She took a deep breath, as if this story exhausted her. "After that, he knew he couldn't come back. Physically or mentally. Our leaders would have killed him on sight. But that wasn't the worst of it. He got a taste of the pure, evil darkness, and he liked it. He ran from us,  and grew stronger in his powers. He ended the war by defeating the Son of Darkness. But instead of becoming a hero, he took the role of the Dark Lord as his own. But even then, he couldn't actually do much harm to us. We were bigger in number and power. But he is the worst kind of enemy- paitent, and with nothing to lose. He waited and watched as eventually less and less Children of Dark and Light were born. As he waited, his powers only grew. Three years ago he attacked us directly. Many of our children were lost, and the new war started. Ever since, we have been in a devastating war, and we're losing.
It is prophesied that one day, two Daughters- the most powerful Daughter of Darkness and the most powerful Daughter of the Light would destroy him. We think that you are the prophesied Daughter of Darkness. We have scanned you as you've slept, and you are more powerful than I've ever seen- more powerful than any Child of the Dark, Light, or a mixture of both. The most powerful Children are about 10 or 20 times stronger and more powerful than a normal Child. You are an estimated 50-80 times stronger and more powerful. That is also why Marcus probably rushed you here. Darius would love to get his hands on you first. Whether to have you as an ally or to kill you, I don't know."
I say there in utter shock. There was someone out there trying either to hire me or murder me. I'm 50 times stronger? And I was expected to be one half of our salvation? How can I be? I'm nothing, I just woke up. I haven't done any grand accomplishments, or proven myself yet.
'Have you found the Daughter of Light yet?" I asked. Gina shook her head.
"No, we haven't, though I suspect she will wake soon if you're awake. And when she does, and you two meet, it will be the final stage of the war. And it will be the ultimate challenge getting you two to get along. The two groups of Children are polar opposites. Light and Dark. The dark can drown out the light, and the light can dispel the Dark. We rarely work well together, especially the powerful ones. I don't know how you'll do it, especially with someone as strong-willed and stubborn as you."
I rolled my eyes but couldn't bring myself to say something sarcastic back. The knowledge that the fate of an entire war, an entire species rested, on my shoulders made me fail to think of any retort. I hadn't even participated in the war yet, and already the burden was so heavy. I just hope I can continue to walk, and fight under the unbearable weight.
