The next chapter is the last one before the epilogue.
It's snowing so badly back in Colorado that we can't go back yet.
We've been here three weeks, and I'm having a panic attack.
See, after we found out I was pregnant with Emmy, Nick and I made the difficult decision for him to get a vasectomy, meaning we can't use any more children.
But, I'm sitting in the hotel bathroom, staring blankly at a positive pregnancy test.
I didn't cheat on Nick.
But I know that's what he going to think.
I'm a month, two weeks, and two days pregnant.
It's the day he found me.
We had sex that day.
But he's going to think I cheated.
My whole family is going to think I cheated.
I don't know how this is going to go over.
I've been in here for two and a half hours and Nick is demanding answers outside the door.
I cried.
Not becaus I don't want the baby, because fuck, I do.
But because he's going to think I cheated on him.
I don't want to have another fight. I shove the test in my hoodie pocket and exit the bathroom.
"What's wrong?" He demands.
"Nothing."
I'm scared to say. I already know how he's going to react, but I don't want to hear it.
I don't want to hear him say he doesn't trust me.
"Eve. You promised." He says.
I stop on my way to the balcony, and I look down at my stomach.
"Eve?" He asks.
"I'm pregnant." I mutter.
"What?" he asks.
I turn around.
"I'm pregnant."
Silence.
There isn't a single sound in the room.
Nick's expression doesn't change.
He takes a deep breath, and then I see shock and confusion, realization, sadness, and then pain, and finally, anger.
"How?" He demands.
"I don't know." I mumble.
"Well it's obviously not mine! I can't get you pregnant!"
"Well-"
"Eve..." Dad starts shaking his head. "I can't believe you."
"Guys-"
"Get out." Nick says.
"What?" I repeat.
"Get. Out."
"But-"
"I'm serious. Go sit in the lobby. I need to fucking think. I knew we had issues, but I never though you would do this. I trusted you."
"Nick," I start. "Just give me a chance to-"
"No!" He shouts.
I run my hands across my face and walk out silently.
