It's been a few days since I skipped work, and I haven't skipped a single class since that day either. I'm getting dressed now, to go on a date. Mason is blasting music and playing video games.
"What are you getting all fancy for?" Mace inquires as I fix up my shitty hair in the mirror.
"I got asked on a date," I say simply.
"By a chick? Wow, she probably got tired of waiting for your lazy ass to notice her," Mason says.
"Guess so. I like it though. You know, that she took the first step. It's different," I smile a bit. I'm rather excited now, we'll be going to the mall and a movie with dinner closing off the night, as she suggested.
"Your eyes are smiling," Mason says, having paused his video game. "Finally."
"My eyes?"
"Yeah, when you smile lately it doesn't reach your eyes," Mason says and goes to me, adjusting the out of place collar on my jacket. "Don't fall in love too hard now, I don't wanna have to fight a chick," Mason hums and winks.
"You know I only love you," I say and turn to him, patting his head. "I'm going. Have fun in class later," I say and go to the door, putting on my black boots.
"You look like an emo surfer boy." Mason says and crosses his arms. "Your face and hair say 'I live in California' but your clothes say 'I live in the underworld and don't know what color is'." Mason chuckles, grabbing a bottle of water from the table and following me to the door.
"Hey, Pippi Longstocking, I don't need your judgement. See ya." Jayk leaves the dorm.
***** MASON'S POV *****
Why does it feel like my heart is stinging? It can't be because of Jayk. What the hell is wrong with me?
I sigh when the door closes and lock it, then go back to playing video games. I hope he has fun, I really do. He needs a break from this trance he's been in since his parents died. I push my hair back and yawn as I continue playing, but my fingers aren't moving as much as they were before. I huff and shut off the console and radio, getting out of bed and putting on my sneakers to go for a jog outside. Maybe I'll see Jayk on the way.
Wait, what? Why am I thinking that?
Sure enough, I jog my way outside to the track near the parking lot and see Jayk waiting by his car, leaning against the drivers side door. I smile and go to him. "Hey, did she ditch you?" I ask.
"No, she's on her way. Are you stalking me?" He asks and narrows his eyes. "Look, I know you're madly in love with me but this is too much."
"I just decided to get my ass up and go for a run. That's more than you ever do," I lean against the car next to him.
"Isn't it too cold for a run?"
"I like it. I'll be fine," I say and stuff my hands in my pockets. "This is your first date in awhile. Who even is this girl?"
"I know. And she's a senior, but she's in my history class because she failed it. Twice."
"Wow, I was excited for you then you just brought it way down." I shake my head. A senior. Years older than Jayk, and she's failed the same class twice. Did she not show up to class ever? Then again, Jayk likes the bad, rebellious type.
"I don't need your approval just like I don't need your judgement," Jayk says and stands up straight when he sees a girl walking towards us. "She's cute," I say and stand straight too. "I'll be off, then. Have fun," I say and hold my hand out for us to exchange a handshake we made up freshman year.
