The icy wind blew through my hair as if trying to challenge me. The past few weeks have been the worse winter we've had in a long time. The ice itself had caused us to lose electricity for about a week. That didn't really matter though, we were used to the power outages. The only problem we were having was keeping warm. We had used all of our firewood and each time we sent a few people out to get firewood, they never came back. It was too risky to keep sending people out to get firewood, we had lost ten people in that one week alone. We were already a small group of slayers as it is and losing just one person has a huge impact on us. Now that we've lost ten, everything's getting harder. The less people, the easier it is to target them. We had always been a target for the bloodlings and even a few other slayer groups who were jealous of the numbers of bloodlings we had taken down before. I let my sword slash through the wind into our old targets. We used to use them in the target range but most of us preferred to use hand to hand combat rather than throwing a dagger or using a gun.
"Kyra!" I heard a voice call knocking me out of my focused trace. "Get in here before the storm arrives. It's suppose to bring at least four feet of snow and the wind chill is going to cause their air temperature get to below zero."
"Don't care. I'm busy." I stated not even turning towards the person who had called my name.
"I don't have time to argue with you." The voice said. "Get inside now. We have things to discuss anyway."
"I told you I'm busy." My voice was bitter. I was not the easiest person to talk to... especially not right now.
"Kyra... it involves your brother." I heard the voice say quietly. Did he just say my brother? We hadn't brought up the topic of my brother ever since he disappeared a few weeks ago. They knew I didn't want to talk about my brother yet they still think we should discuss the possibilities of where he might be. "We found someone who might know where he is." I turned towards the voice. A boy, only a half of a year younger than me. Onyx had always been there for me in my time of need, he had actually been the one to convince me to form a team of bloodling slayers. I walked over to him nodding as a signal to go inside seeing his face full of relief at my agreement. He probably thought I would catch a cold or something with his overprotective attitude. Although Onyx was the one who had convinced me to form this team, I was the leader, while Onyx or anyone else really, had no say in decisions . I decided what and when anyone would do anything, no one was allowed to do anything without my permission. It was for their own safety. Some of my friends... my teammates... they were too reckless. They made poor decisions which always led to them getting killed or tortured to their breaking point to when they begged me to show mercy and kill them after they were returned to us bloodied, bruised, and nearly dead with no chance of survival. Their death happened by my hands. Five deaths of my own friends were because of me but they asked me to, I never executed anyone, except for the bloodlings and previously vampires. It was their own mistakes that costed them their lives. I no long could worry about them, I only had people who obeyed my orders now anyway.
As we walked side by side, I noticed very quickly that my team had already begun to conserve our resources by lighting very few candles. Smart idea. The storm approaching was a nasty one for sure and we had a good chance of being trapped inside here for a few days after it passed. Our walls were glittered with jewels, not surprising considering this used to be a vampire's castle back over three-hundred years ago. The stain glass windows were boarded up with thick plywood to prevent the high winds from shattering the beautiful yet disgusting glass. Sure, we could change the lovely images of vampires feasting on humans, we had the money for it but the glass windows were not even on our list of concerns. Besides, last time I tried changing the windows, one of my teammates insisted that we could not destroy the ancient windows as they were apart of history. History? I really didn't care about our history, all I cared about was not having to see humans being sucked of their blood while I was trying to eat breakfast. Taking my eyes away from the boarded up windows as we neared our meeting center, I was curious to see what possible ideas my team had come up with this time. Walking inside, I was surprised to see only a single girl, either my age or possible a year older, with perfect golden locks and deep sapphire colored eyes, sitting silently at the wooden table.
