A Sudden Fascination

Chapter 1

As I stared out the window of my mom's SUV, I watched as the scenery changed from the large Victorian style houses I had grown up around to the bleak and desolate wood in the outskirts of my hometown of Augusta. I leaned my elbow on the door of the passenger side car as my mom drove away from my happy life and towards my new hell.

"Casey, everything will be fine. I promise you will love our new house and you will make plenty of new friends," my mom said for the millionth time since she decided to move away. I only nodded my head and kept staring out the window as she kept making pitiful attempts at conversation.

As I looked out the window, I thought of all of the friends, or should I say friend, that I am leaving behind. My friend Sarah was the only person that had stuck by my side since second grade. Since then I had a few acquaintances, but eventually I would slowly drive them away without knowing why they left. I didn't mind though, it just showed who I could trust.

Sarah and I were like Pickles and Peanut Butter, a horrible combination to most people, but for certain people, like pregnant ladies, it could work. We did everything together, and at lunch we would always sit together and talk about the stupidest things like if China took over the world and things like that. We were never normal. We weren't that into girly things, not saying that we weren't pretty because to be honest Sarah was one of the most gorgeous girls in school with her dirty blonde hair that was always naturally perfect, bright green eyes, and a body that all of the guys at school fell head over heels for. She never really noticed how pretty she was though even though everyone told her constantly.

I am almost the exact opposite of Sarah. She is pretty tall at 5'7" and I am a lowly 5'2 1/2". Yes, I am so short that I have to count the half! I have mid length brunette hair that falls to my shoulder blades, a really athletic body so it's not overly attractive, and eyes that can never make up their mind. They are grey in the morning, green in the afternoon, and sometimes they are blue on a weird day. Well that is what I have been told by Sarah because I spend so much time staring at myself in the mirror that I would know that. Not!

Sarah and I never really talked to anyone else because the only people that tried to talk to us were the stuck up snobby popular people so we figured it was best to ignore them. I never knew why they were so intent on talking to us when we were practically loners, but I guess that isn't my problem anymore. I just hope Sarah can handle herself without me because don't want her hanging out by herself, and I am moving too far away to hang out with her anymore. I am moving to Massachusetts from Maine so I will be living hours away. At least we still have Facebook to contact each other.

"Honey, we are almost there," my mom said. I didn't realize how long I had been staring out the window because it was now 4:00 and we left at 10:00 in the morning. We passed a school, which I am guessing is the one I will be attending next week. It said Hartlett High School on the sign with 'School starts September first.' underneath it.

I sighed and turned to my mom and said, "Of all places, why did we have to move here?"

My mom paused for a second and said, "I have some friends here and I thought it would be a good chance for you to make some new friends."

"I was perfectly fine back home," I stated angrily.

I went back to staring out the window just in time to see the most amazing looking guy ever. He was about 6 feet tall with brown hair that framed his face perfectly. He was muscular but not so much that he looked like he could crush you. He had a slight tan, probably from working out outdoors. He was wearing a red tee shirt and fitted jeans that fortunately didn't show his boxers like so many guys these days.
