Prologue: It Smells Like Rain
April Rain Song by Langston Hughes
Let the rain kiss you.
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops.
Let the rain sing you a lullaby.
The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk.
The rain makes running pools in the gutter.
The rain plays a little sleep-song on our roof at night--
And I love the rain.~
Jesse was always saying weird things. Expressions, if you will.
His favorite was, "it smells like rain."
Of course, sometimes he meant it literally. But he would say it whenever he trusted someone or something, or pretty much anything he felt like complimenting. Basically, this saying was used to regard something or someone positive.
Once, I asked him why he thought rain was such a good thing anyway. He just smiled at me and said, "one day you'll understand."
I had only playfully punched him in the shoulder, and, promptly after that, he bit my hand.
Jesse was my best friend.
And this is the story of our time together.
