It's past several chapters and I still haven't used Author's POV, so I'm just gonna stick with Mayu's POV for the whole story.
Just FYI.The frosty grass crunched beneath my pacing feet. The chill dew melted under my brown shoes and kept following Hatsumi, making sure not to go ahead since I tend to walk fast.
The atmosphere was somewhat awkward as we went the way to wherever we we're going in complete silence.
All that was heard was the howling wind that blew through that made strands of my hair stick to my face like glue. I pushed my hair back with my numbing fingers.
Despite that it was cold out- almost freezing- I was able to keep warm with the jacket I had on. Yuki had made sure I put it on before I went to school and I was glad she did.
I hovered over at Hatsumi, who was strangely wearing a short pink and black summer yukata. How was she not cold?
She must've noticed my staring because she spun around and blinked at me curiously. She a very similar expression when she had looked at me in that funny way in her fox form. "What is it?" she question, breaking the silence.
"O-oh, nothing. Just kinda surprised how your not freezing in this cold in that outfit."
She shrugged. "I like the cold. So it doesn't really bother me."
"Oh, okay." Lucky.
"Well we're here," she turning her head to the scene behind. We were in the middle of a large grassy field. Trees were lined along the west side that casted a eerie shadowy area behind them. On the top of them was an orange-yellow patches of sunlight. It was the same for the grass. It reminded me of a landscape painting. And Hatsumi looked like she was the middle. Her body now turned sideways, staring off at the setting sun. She was just a silhouette in the painting.
"Think fast."
"Huh?--" A sharp blast of wind cut right next to me through the air. I held my hands down on my skirt as it passed. "What was that?!" I gasped.
"An attack. If I had aimed any closer to the right, I would've hit you."
"YOU WERE AIMMING FOR ME?!" I yelled.
"I'm the attacker right? So of course I'm going to aim for you. But this is just training, so I can't harm you. At least not much."
"EHH?!"
"You act surprised. Why is that?"
"Cause I didn't expect-"
"No," she cut me off. "It's because you let your guard down."
"..."
"When you are fighting you cannot ever let your guard down. Even if you didn't know that he or she was going to attack you. If you choose to not keep your guard up, it could lead to serious problems. Death even."
I nodded even though I was slightly confused on what she meant.
"Anyways..."
Whoosh!
With a flash, she ran up to me and knocked the wind of me with a sudden push. Without a reaction- it was too fast react to- I came to a crashing fall on the ground. Ny head landed first.
"Aaaaaggh!" I cried.
"See what I mean?"
I was too busy holding my head and yelling out in pain to hear what she said. Gosh, that hurt!! I thought.
"You alright?" I hear her say. I sat back up, rubbing my hand only to see a foot coming straight at me.
Think fast!
I reflexed my hand and (somehow) caught her foot just in time. It was centimeters away from my face.
"Good reflexes," she complemented. She moved her foot back down and stuck her hand out to me. I took her hand and helped lift me back up.
"H-how did I do that?"
"You didn't let your guard down, that's how. You saw that I was about to kick you so you reacted and blocked it."
"But that fast?"
"Yup. One of your magic abilities, is increasing your speed."
Cool! I cheered my mind.
"However,"
Oh boy...
"You're not the only one who is like that. Keep in mind that monsters can be quick and highly skilled with many abilities. It all depends on who it is and how much magic they have."
I nodded again. This time I understood what she ment.
She continued: "Now that you have the hand to hand combat stuff down, it's time for the next lesson."
"How many lessons are there going to be?"
"As many as it takes. I need to be sure that you're prepared for what you're going up against."
"Okay." I said seriously.
"Summon your sword," she commanded.
"Yes!" I clapped my hands together, not exactly knowing what I was doing. "Okay..." I exhaled. I squeezed my eyes shut, and focused hard. "Come on, come on..." I thought harder as I was making my eyes tighter. Then I let out a big breath and opened my eyes. "Aaaaand NOW!!" I shouted. Suddenly I felt a force of energy dwelling inside me. I knew what was going to happen next. I could feel it! This magic that was about to--
Flarrrrp!
Still in my ridiculous position with my knees bent, and hands still clasp together like I was holding a clap. I blinkied rapidly a few times, and the color of my face turned beet red.
I had farted.
"Well at least you let something come out," she noted.
"Ah... Um..." I was still frozen, but my face slowly turned back to its normal pale color.
"You're over thinking it Mayu." she said waving her hand by her nose. "Just try to relax and don't think about summoning sword. Instead, think about bringing out your magic and then it'll come."
I felt uneasy. "R-right."
"Don't worry, you can do it." she assured, giving me a calm look. A small but not weak smile with relaxed eyes.
I took in a breath, then exhaled, and closed my eyes again. Focus Mayu, I told myself internally. I tried to think of the time I unlocked my powers, thinking backwards. Like retracing my steps, but to myself.
Do you remember?
"Remember what?" I said aloud to only where I could hear.
How you did it.
"No, I don't."
Think harder. It's there.
"My... Magic?"
Yes. The source of it in fact.
"Where's it at?"
That's for you to find. It's your choice to find it...
Somehow I could feel the mysterious voice walk away. Like walking and then shutting the door behind.
The door...
...behind.
That's it!
I focused harder than ever this time and visualized an image in my mind. Me, standing with my back to the a white painted door. It had a golden knob coated with dimonds. A part if it gleamed with light that was bouncing on from a window above me. I crooked my neck up and saw a starry sky behind the glass frame. It looked much like the sky in my dream that I had in class. The stars shone bright that made them stand out like they were conquering the darkness around them. I moved my head back down and looked at my hands. I could almost feel the sword on them, just waiting to be used. Waiting.
I move my right foot in fowards and then my left.
Repeat.
Right foot. Left foot. Forwards.
Repeat.
I was at the door my feet now side by side. I reached my hand out, and turned the knob.
Without a doubt in my mind.
"The source of it."
The source of the magic. My magic, my sword. I stepped in and felt the familiar heat that hit my skin when I had broken the barrier that I had held my magic. And I had broken it again.
I clapped my hands together outside my mind. "Found it!" I said. My voice still to only where only I could hear it. Then, a beam of pink light came busting out from them. A shearing sound of metal could be heard, like something was genty scrapping the smooth surface of the metal. And out came my sword with its dark and dull pink color.
For a second it raised from my hands. Just in time, I gripped the handle and waved it in front of me.
Not only was my sword present, but my magical girl clothes were as well. I opened my eyes and it revealed the neon green color of them.
"I did it!!" I cheered.
"Nice going, kid. I told you that you could do it," spoke Hatsumi.
I smiled. "Yeah, all by myself!"
(Literally what I say when I accomplish something. Even if it's a small task like that XD)
"Now that's out of the way..." she held up three fingers. "It's time for lesson three."
"Ok, what do I gotta do?"
"Fight me, simple as that."
"Um, are you sure?" A sword with magic powers versus a someone with only her hands to fight...?
"Did I studder?"
"N-no." This'll be easy then!
She motioned a hand at me. "Ok, then come at me. I'm open."
"..." I made no reply, and stepped closer a couple of times. Was this really good idea? She could get hurt... I swallowed hard and made a few more steps. Then I took off sprinted as fast as I could. I eyed my target and didn't keep them off as I swung my sword up over my shoulders about to crash it down.
I expected her to move at this time, but she kept still as if waiting for me to hit. My steps got bigger and bigger, yet slower and slower moving myself to run past her.
I came to stop a couple feet away from her.
"What was that?"
"I.. Um.." I looked at the ground.
"You couldn't hit me, could you?"
"Maybe..." I said, still not giving her eye contact.
"Mayu, you can't let yourself be afraid of-"
"I'm not afraid!!" I was now looking at her, my voice raised. "I just..." my voice trailed off.
"I see," she muttered. "You can't hit me."
I nodded slowly, my eyes averting back to the ground.
She let out a heavy sigh. "You're too kind."
"..."
Hatsumi stared at me for a moment, a long moment. She was thinking about something. Was she going to yell at me? It wouldn't surprise me if she did...
She opened her mouth to speak, I tighten my eyes, ready for her to lash out. "How about this," she suggested. Her voice was calm and steady; not what I expected. "When you are going after me, try to visualize me of someone else."
"Like who?"
"Someone you hate. Or something if that's the case."
"But, I don't hate anyone."
She shook her head in disagreement and put her hand on my shoulders. "You and me know that's not true." I was now glancing at her, my eyes focused into hers. "Even the kindest of people knows someone they hate."
Everyone?... That word hanged in my mind as I tried to think of someone. But it was hard. I would have a hatred for someone.... But how I can if I don't know who it is? Someone very close to me left and I have no idea how she did... Maybe, I could make up someone. Someone who took her.
"..."
"..."
For long, quite moment I thought about it. I tried imagining someone in front of me to replace Hatsumi.
Then it sparked. There it was, a shady-looking person in front of me. I can't really say who it is, or why I chose this person because.... I don't know who the person is that I hate. Neither if it is a person. All I know is it's a thing that I hate and long for him or her to bring somone very close to me back.
The bangs of my hair casted a shadow on my eyes as angered thoughts came to me. I gritted my teeth and clutched the cold handle of my sword.
Even though I felt a raging emotion running through my like a bullet train, confusion also hang to it. It overpowered it with no effort. No doubt about it. Then, without hesitation, I lunged forwards my sword swinging behind me as if I were going to through a boomerang.
Lesson three was now in its action.
