Courtney's P.O.V

One might call me crazy. In fact, you could call me insane, if you'd like. Yes, I'd be totally fine with it. Why? Because I'm not like all the others. I live in with my aunt, I have no friends, except for Camila, and most importantly, I have a mission. A mission that might just change my life. Basically, ever since I found out that my dad is still alive, I've been working on a plan to find him. It all happened about seven or eight years ago, back when I was six.

I stood by the slide of the neighborhood park as the fire truck zoomed by.

"Whoa! Courtney, did ya see it?" My bestfriend Camila pointed in the direction... of my apartment. But, I wasn't sure, it could've been any house over there. I nodded.

"What about you, Mommy? Did you see it?" She asked her mother.

"No, Camila, but I heard it." Camila's mom looked over her shoulder from the bench she was sitting at.

"Oh my....." Her mother trailed off.

"The smoke. Cam, it's coming right from Courtney's apartment! Girls, we gotta go!" Camila's mom said. We all quickly got into the Diaz family car and Camila's mom drove to the sight of the fire. Sadly, it was my apartment building.

"You two girls, hold on. I'm going to go talk to an officer." Camila's mom explained. Even from afar, we could still hear the conversation between Mrs. Diaz and Officer Cole.

"Excuse me, Officer Cole?"

"Yes, ma'am? Oh, hello, Mrs. Diaz!"

"One question, Officer. What exactly happened here?"

"Sad story, really, an apartment building burning down. Lots of lives lost. We're still trying to investigate what happened."

"Can I know the list of survivors? I was in charge of Courtney Manchester for the afternoon. Wondering about her parents." Mrs. Diaz said. Officer Cole paused.

"Hold on for a sec, I'll check." He said. Cole returned after chatting with Officer Hoffman.

"Listen here, Jennifer, I'm afraid to tell you. The Manchester family, Linda, Ray, and the kids: Lizzie and Parker..... They were all in the building sadly."

"So you're saying-"

"Yes, Jen."

Camila's mom burst into tears.

"Mom?" Camila whispered softly.

"Courtney, your parents, and siblings, they aren't here." I knew, they were dead.

A couple days later, when I was just getting used to living with my aunt, I woke up early and looked at the daily newspaper article on the kitchen table. The main headline read:

Within the lost, 3/5 of the Manchester family died on Thursday evening's fire, father yet to be found.

That meant, my father could still be alive! But sadly, there wasn't anything I could do. The whole town believed he was dead as well, but I still hung on to hope.

And so I grew up, living with my aunt, not living a normal life. Camila is still my bestfriend, but it's not the same. Most of the times when I hang out with her, I'm the third wheel. She's always with her boyfriend, Beau. I basically didn't have anyone I could express myself with. I remember how close Cam and I used to be now it's all:

"Beau and I have a date tonight."

" I can't hang on Friday, Beau and I have movie night."

"The dance is Saturday, I'm going with Beau. Sorry, Court."

Ever since 'the accident', I've trying to figure out a possible way, to find my father. Everyone told me that there was no use. He was dead, period. I even got told that by Beau, the few times I spoke with him. My aunt lives in the house where Grandma and Grandpa used to live, so I decided to snoop around my dad's old room. I didn't find much clues. Grandpa and Dad were really close, so I decided to check the master bedroom. There I saw it, hanging on the wall, and framed. It was a certificate, a very suspicious. It read:

MOST AMAZING EXPERIMENT AT COUNTY FAIR!

Swellview County Fair

When Grandpa was young, he was a scientist. He would always go to the Swellview county fair every year with my dad. Dad loved the place, could he be there? I went to the official Swellview website and searched up Ray Manchester. I could not believe it, my dad was alive! He looked exactly as he did the morning of the fire! Swellview was nearby, only 15 minutes away actually. Apparently, he owns a store named Junk-N-Stuff. My aunt was out. It was around noon, I could get to Swellview by then. I headed to my garage and got my bike out. My journey to happiness was about to begin.
