It seemed like that one question froze time. All three of the men standing in front of me stared with wide eyes. Even Sherlock was shocked, I didn't think that was possible. It had probably been five minuets until someone finally spoke.
"Great, now there's two of them," John Watson finally sighed. "What do we do with her now?"
"Well it's not like we just let her go! I mean, she did try to steal our only lead," Lestraude replied.
"Yeah, but she can, you know, deduce things. It's not like we lock her up. We need all the help we can get on this case!"
"You think I'm going to authorize a street thief to help us on a private investigation?"
"Yes I do, and you will because I know you know that we need her to help us. There are lives at stake here, Lestraude. If you need someone to represent her, I'll do it," Sherlock said.
"Umm, if I can say something," I chimed in. "With, Mr. Holmes here, keeping track of my every move or whatever, I wouldn't dream of running away!" The sarcasm was heavy in my every word.
"Ugh, fine. I'm trusting you on this Sherlock. Don't make me regret this," Lestraude groaned.
"Ah! Excellent!" Sherlock clapped his hands together. He turned around on his heels and headed back out the door, with John close behind. I took it as my cue to follow them. Lestraude watched my every step as I passed by him. I quickly caught up with them, but I stayed a few steps behind them. They kept whispering to each other, and by whispering, I mean John was silently screaming at Sherlock while he just nodded in response.
"Hang on!" Lestraude called as we almost reached the door. "She seemed to have a talent for escaping. I don't want her ditching anyone while you're out. So I have one condition if you look after her, Sherlock..." He said as he walked up to us. The sound of handcuffs filled the awkward silence. I looked down at my wrist, it was handcuffed and the other was cuffed on Sherlock's wrist. "Is this some sort of joke?" Sherlock asked with a confused smile.
"I'm making sure that she doesn't get away, and this could teach you how to act around people, Sherlock," Lestraude smiled.
"You have got to be kidding me!" I sighed. "You had to go chain me to Mr. Holmes here! I mean, couldn't you chain me to Watson or something? He is much easier to drag around... And I would have an advantage against Holmes!"
Shit. Everything just spilled out of me. Sherlock looked at me with a sort of offended look on his face. You can't be serious that he was offended by that. "You're free to go now," Lestraude smiled.
Oh, I'm gonna kill him. That smug grin on his face is gonna regret being seen. Sherlock continued out the door. I got a little whiplash when he pulled me along. "A little warning next time!" I groaned. "Where are we even going?"
"Back to the house, of course," Sherlock replied, like I should already know the answer. What? Was I part of his little clique now? Great, I'm chained to a consulting detective and now he thinks I'm his little friend. "What's next? We give each other pet names?" I said aloud. They both looked at me like I had three eyes. I really got to get my mind palace thing together. I continued walking, even though I have no idea where we're going.
John flagged down a taxi. The cabbie can't see two people handcuffed together! I grabbed Sherlock's arm and linked it with mine. "What are you doing?" He asked.
"I'm blending in with the circumstance," I replied. "I think it would be better for your reputation if people see you linking arms with a woman rather than being handcuffed to one!"
"She's got a point," John chimed.
"You're not helping!" We both replied.
We filed into the taxi, Sherlock and I sitting next to each other, and John on the pull-out seat facing us. "221B Baker Street, please," Sherlock called to the cabbie. He nodded and drove off.
