SableDragon: This is my first attempt at a story for several people. I hope you like it!

Black. That is all I see at first. Then the black begins to fade and I see color in a purple morning hue. "You slept well I hope?" His voice in my head felt as natural as breathing. Yeah I had slept well, but I couldn't remember how I had gotten here. I was in a tree, it's limbs woven together like an old basket, and I was dressed in the clothes I had worn the day before. "How did I get here?" I had not been expecting an answer. "You were in danger. This was the safest place," his voice again. "Why was I in danger? And who are you?"
"The danger was because of the company you keep. As for who I am, I can't make everything that simple." I could hear the smile in his voice, an arrogant smirk. " Okay smart a**, how do I get home?"
" That presents another problem."
"And what's that?"
"You're home is gone."

All I remember is fire. Fire and screaming. Fear. I'm afraid for someone, someone I care about.

I don't remember closing my eyes again but suddenly I'm opening them.  There's a blanket over me and it's nearly sunset. "So what's the plan here? Am I going to live in this tree?"
"Maybe. "
"But I'll be alone. "
"Not entirely. "
"Yes, I'll have a voice in my head. That'll keep me from being lonely," I said sarcastically.
He paused," I'm afraid I can't be anything more than that."
"Than what? A voice?"
He didn't answer, instead he left me to the setting sun.

A voice. Soft whispers in my ear. "don't die, not yet. not yet..." My body is alight with fire. It's coursing through my veins. It makes my shoulder blades burn. "Amara!" The pain is excruciating, and I cry out. "Amara, you're okay." His arms hold me tight and I can't see his face. But his midnight black wings are burned in my memory.

His voice wakes me. "Amara? Amara are you okay?" I nod. The voice isn't in my head anymore, it sounds close, out loud. I try to open my eyes but he covers them. "Don't," he warns.  I move my hand over his, "Amara..." Slowly I move his hand away. He's tall with black hair that hides his eyes. "Are you okay?" he asks.
I nod, puzzled. "Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"
"You were...calling out in your sleep.  You sounded scared. "
"I was? What did I say?"
" I...don't know. I couldn't tell."
"Are you who I've been talking to?"
"Umm..."
"How did you-", his hand covered my mouth.
"Do you have to ask so many questions? Never mind. Just please be quiet."
He took his hand from my mouth and I resisted the urge to finish my question. He studied me for a few seconds, his eyes never leaving me. Finally he seemed to come to a decision. "You may call me what ever you wish, but my given name is Xander."
I blinked at him. " Xander?" I said trying the name out. He nodded nervously, as though I would run at the sound of his name. Instead, I tried to smile.
