I woke up to a voice yelling outside. A very familiar voice. Polaris'. It was filled with anger and sadness all at once. Much like my heart from the previous day's events. The next thing I knew, Polaris was inside the tree house and stared at Raf and I in shock. I was confused as to why he reacted that way at first, but then it dawned on me.
"Stop right where you are, it's not what it looks like," I said calmly.
"Then what the hell is this?" He yelled.
Raf woke up. He looked at us in confusion.
"Why are you yelling?" He glared at Polaris.
"Because I came up here to find Annabella. To tell her about what happened. To console her because I'm her boyfriend. Not you," Polaris said allowing some smugness to show through his angry tone.
"Okay, first of all, you're not my boyfriend. You stood me up. I was waiting for you, but you never came. Also, what the hell happened?" I looked at him with confusion.
"You know what? Maybe Raf can tell you. Since you're so good at running to other guys instead of confronting your problems," He rolled his eyes and climbed out.
I simply stared in shock. I couldn't believe that he had said that about me. My heart sunk slowly, and so the tears came along.
"Please don't cry, Annabella. He's not worth your tears. He's a good friend, but he doesn't know how to be more than that," Raf said while he hugged me, again.
I calmed down, finally. Raf knew how to put me back together better than almost anyone. Of course my mother knew best, but she was asleep when I needed to solve my puzzle of a self.
"Do you know what he was talking about? When he said he was going to console me?" I asked.
"No, I don't actually, let's go check," He answered.
"I hope it's not too bad," That was a lie. I was praying that it wouldn't be too bad.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
We climbed down into my yard and heard sirens screaming loudly in the background. How had I not noticed them before?
My heart began thumping in my chest, I was sure that even Raf could hear it. I ran quickly through my house, all the way to the front. I saw my mother being carried into an ambulance. My younger brother in tears. I ran to him and he simply held tightly. I looked into his grey eyes while he repeatedly asked me,"What's wrong with mummy?"
And it killed me because I genuinely could not give him an answer.
I quickly tried to find a medic and one caught my attention. My uncle, Joseph.
Our eyes met for a brief moment and his facial expression changed to one of relief. He came over to me.
"What happened to my mom?" I managed to get out with a broken voice.
"We're not sure, yet. But it's looking like she had a heart attack. I'll take you and your brother to the hospital," My uncle said and I nodded.
I couldn't believe Polaris wouldn't tell me what happened because of his pettiness. To say I was pissed was an understatement.
I found my brother, Calvin, through all the chaos and explained to him what was going on to the best of my ability. He hesitantly nodded with teary eyes and we made it into my uncle's vehicle quickly. I stared out the window in shock with tears threatening to fall all through out the ride, while I heard my brothers whispers of prayer in the background.
