Goodbye

It started when they first met. It rained that day and she didn't have an umbrella. He did and he walked her home. They were fast friends, laughing as they reached her home. She paused, sighing deeply.

"What's wrong?" He asked with genuine concern.

"I guess we have to say goodbye." She said sadly. "I hate goodbyes."

"Then let's not say it. We'll see each other again." He smiled, not understanding. "We do go to the same school."

"Just promise me something." She pleaded and he nodded. "That you won't walk away without reason, like, leave me." His eyes lit with understanding.

"I promise. Do you promise me?" She nodded, smiling. "Then I'll see you soon."

They were happy but so afraid of saying goodbye. She went back to becoming happy, becoming the girl that everyone knew. She helped him with homework, he taught her how to laugh again. They were inseparable.

She helped him with his brother, and in return got to stand next to him while they watched his brother present. She took a picture, unaware that it would be their last. He said he would catch up with them. She should've stopped him. She knew, she knew immediately.

She watched the fire envelope him. She was strong. She refused to cry but she refused to laugh. She acted fine. But her smile never reached her eyes.

The day of the funeral, she couldn't speak. Everyone stood and commemorated the dead. 'He never gave up on them, he was always there, he never said goodbye. He never walked away.' It was her turn but she couldn't speak. Nobody minded, they all were hurting. Everyone grieved over a patch of dirt that didn't even contain his body.

They left and she sat there alone. She touched the gravestone and said the only word that could break her silence. "Goodbye." Her tears mingled with rain, just like the day they met. She stood and brushed off her black dress. And she walked away, like she promised she never would.
