"Brrrrrrrrrrring!" the school bell chimed loudly as children scurried to their classrooms. Christelle and Ashleigh got caught up in the jumble and gave each other nervous glances. It was Monday, the girls had gone the night without letting on about their newfound super powers. The day dragged on until lunch when Devon, Christelle's nine-year-old sister, fell from a piece of playground equipmentand would have broken her arm if Ashleigh had not been nearby to float her gently to the ground. All of the children gawked at them, and Ashleigh and Devon were taken to the school office, do that the school nurse could look them over. Meanwhile, Chistelle used her power to secretly watch what was going on in the office. When the nurse asked Ashleigh what happened, she simply stuttered, but not a word came out. Finally, Christelle could not contain herself any longer- she walked out and said "It was an accident" .
The nurse and Ashleigh turned with curious looks on their faces. Then the nurse spoke, asking, "What was an accident, dear?"
"We were just playing a game and then we had super powers," Christelle blurted out.
"I see," the nurse said, obviously lying.
After a few minutes the nurse called both girls parents. Christelle's parents came to pick the three girls up. They finally arrived home, after the long minutes of the loudest silence the girls had ever heard. Christelle's parents took Ashleigh and Christelle into the basement and told them to explain exactly what had happened. When they were finished, they told the girls that the tall cylinder room was an experiment they had been working on. They also told them that there was a way to go back to normal. A silence crept over the room as the two girls stared.
"All you have to do us press the one button." Christelle's father said, breaking the silence.
"Will we be totally back to normal?" Ashleigh asked.
"Yes, totally normal." he answered. "How about this, you two go over ther and think about it, while we discuss your punishment."
The girls whispered quietly in the corner before walking over to the machine. "We've decided" Ashleigh said pulling open the door, both girls stepped inside, closing the door behind them.
"Should we have said what we chose?" Ashleigh asked.
Christelle shock her head, "They'll figure it out"
Outside the two adults watched the girls enter the machine. They had not been discussing a punishment, rather what the girls would do.
Suspense hung in the air as they waited. After what seemed like hours, the room began to shake. The girls stepped out and Christelle reached her hand up, toward the ceiling and bolts of lightning rained down on them. Both parents gaped, instead of taking away their powers the machine had given them more! Christelle placed her hand on Ashleigh's shoulder and the two began to vaporize. Suddenly Chistelle's parents heard Ashleigh say, "It didn't work ".
The voice came from nowhere, like a thought. Then Christelle spoke, "sorry, we were just testing our powers."
Both of the adults turned to find that the girls stood behind them.
"Girls, what button dud you press?" Christelle's dad asked.
"The same one as last time, number four!" Ashleigh replied.
"Goodness girls," Christelle's mom broke in with a sigh, "we said press the number one not the same one!"
With a giggle the girls went back into the machine. The room shook and the two girls stepped out. Christelle raised her hands and nothing happened. Both girls tested all of their powers, they were gone.
"Christelle, after school, my house- meet me there." Ashleigh whispered as they headed back into class from recess. Math dragged on slowly until three o' clock finally came and the bell rang.
Christelle raced to Ashleigh's house. When she arrived, Ashleigh stood outside her house waiting, beaconing her to follow. Ashleigh went strait to the back yard. In the middle of the yard there was a beautiful gazebo with a small wooden and two chairs. On the table sat a delicate glass chess set. Ashleigh led Christelle to the table and the both sat down.
Ashleigh reached out her hand toward the chess set's knight, and it slowly slid to an adjacent spot.
"But how... Our powers are gone!" Christelle stuttered.
"I have been testing my limits," Ashleigh said, "I can't move big things, nothing bigger then a lunch pail."
"You didn't answer my question, how do you still have powers?" Christelle demanded.
"I don't think we totally got rid of them"
"oh maybe I should, uh, try then" Christelle said, closing her eyes and picturing herself in the neighbor's yard. When she opened her eyes, nothing had happened.
Late that night Christelle snuck Ashleigh into her house, down into the basement and into the machine. When Ashleigh came out, she tested her powers- nothing! The girls never used super powers again, but they never forgot their super accident.
