Neymar eyed the cafeteria up and down a few times scanning for the table full of his friends. He spotted them and quickly looked away. He was hoping to avoid them for a few minutes. He didn't want anybody to know he was currently failing math and if he scored anything below an A on his next test, he'd be kicked off the football team. So, Neymar found an empty table and placed his books down with his lunch.
He sighed at the sight of the food and took out his math homework. He stared at the worksheet before deciding he needed to eat first. He nibbled on what was suppose to be chicken, though it tasted odd, and sighed.
What the fuck is a function? Neymar thought, he tried remembering as hard as he could but nothing came to mind. He stared at the piece of paper for five more minutes, running a distressed hand through his hair.
"Hey babe." Neymar heard.
He only then noticed a group of girls sat at the opposite end of the table.
"Uh, hi?" One of the girls said.
Neymar was listening, but he was still staring at the math in front of him.
"I wanted to ask you a question about the upcoming dance." The guy said.
Neymar frowned. He still needed a date for that stupid dance, of course, the award ceremony and dance for sport and music students will be pretty pointless if he's not playing a sport. Neymar frowned harder at the math, he wanted his award for most goals.
"You do?" The girl asked clearly shocked.
"Yeah, I do. I wanted to know if you would so kindly not wear anything red because it looks awful on you." The guy said.
Neymar looked up and found his teammate, Douglas Costa dishing out the rude comment.
"Hey bro, that's not cool." Neymar spoke up.
"Neymar? What are you doing over here?" Douglas asked scared now that his captain heard the mean joke.
"No, I mean he's right, I do look stupid in red." The girl said staring down at her red shirt.
Neymar frowned. He glared at Douglas.
"I'm sorry about that." Douglas chirped before practically running away.
Neymar's gaze followed him and found a few of the other guys watching. He made a mental note to make them run longer and harder than the others.
"I'm sorry about that. He can be rude sometimes." Neymar apologized.
The girl offered Neymar a weak smile.
"It was really okay." She whispered.
Neymar noticed her friends staring at him like he was from a different planet.
"No, it's not." Neymar stated.
It was awkward. He was staring at the upset girl, and her friends were whispering in each other's ears. Neymar swallowed.
"I like red on you, by the way." Neymar winked.
The girl looked up at Neymar and smiled widely.
"Thank you." She beamed.
Neymar smiled and then stared at his work again. He tapped his pencil against the table.
"Do you need help?" The girl asked.
Neymar offered a hopeful smile. The girl took the pencil from Neymar and did a problem for him. He watched her do it and wondered exactly who she was. He had seen her before, but they never talked. She's quiet and tends to keep to herself. Though, her friend group is a mixture of quiet, loud, and pretty much anybody.
"All you have to do is switch the 'X' with a 'Y' and then solve for y." The girl told.
Neymar watched her do the next one and actually understood it. They spent the next half hour going over functions. The bell rang and the girl moved to get her books.
"What's your name?" He asked.
"Ana." She smiled.
"I'm Neymar, thank you helping me." Neymar smiled.
She tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear and looked away from his eye contact. Neymar couldn't figure out why.
"Do you think you could help me, like tutor me so I can pass my test on Friday?" Neymar asked.
"You only have two days to learn everything. There's a lot more to learn." Ana told.
Neymar frowned and dropped his own gaze to the floor.
"Are you busy after school?" Ana asked.
"I have football until 5, but nothing after." Neymar replied emotionless.
"How about you come over my house after then? You can have dinner with me, or eat before, whatever works, and we'll study together until seven-ish." Ana offered.
"That'd be really good actually. You don't mind?" Neymar asked.
"Not at all." Ana smiled.
Neymar smiled at the girl. He could understand why her friends were of every social group in school. She was just a really nice person.
Neymar walked into math class and went to his assigned seat at the front of the class. He took out his homework and placed it on his desk for his teacher to look at.
"Neymar, you did your homework?" Mr. Silva gaped.
"Yeah." Neymar replied.
"Maybe we can make a habit out of that." Mr. Silva commented.
Neymar rolled his eyes and remembered why he hated school and teachers. They all are so snarky. Do this, do that.
Neymar heard a familiar voice and found Ana sitting at the opposite side of the class. I guess staring at the clock, and not listening the entire time doesn't help him pay attention any better.
