The blistering sun pounds the sand of the desert… several wyvern named cephalos pick at a bare Apceros corpse. They look like any typical wyvern but their wings have evolved into fins that can easily 'swim' through the desert sand. Their head vaugley resemble that of a Diplocaulus. Suddenly, sand rises as if a moving object was underneath. The Cephalos do not attempt to escape; they simply allow the large entity to come between them. The sand explodes and the creature reveals itself…the leader of the piscine wyverns; twice the size of the Cephalos it is the so-called Cephadrome. The leader inspects the unembellished corpse, unsatisfied, the alpha of the pack screeches. However, mid-screech the Cephadrome smells a possible food source; it abruptly stops screaming and dives into the sand as if it was water. The Cephalos instinctively follow; confused by the sudden change in behaviour.

The smell of nourishment brings the pack to a large, ominous cave. The sand is shallow so the wyverns risk having to walk towards the cave on foot. A pair of milky eyes appears from the inside of the cave…the pack silently lower themselves, camouflaging with the sand. A brown wyvern stumbles out of the cave, trying to find its footing. It seems to be a normal wyvern from the back; long tail, two back legs and a pair of large wings however, this species is unique. The Diablos has a head that resembles that of a triceratops, the adolescents of this species are the largest and most dangerous of the animals that live in desert climates but this calf, no bigger than a cephalos, is vulnerable. The Cephadrome cannot believe its luck; the mother is nowhere to be seen, the offspring cannot even walk properly without tripping over itself and the pack could easily over power the car sized baby.

An over excited Cephalos leaps from cover and charges the Diablos baby. The young wyvern screeches for help as it stands there helplessly. Another Cephalos breaks its cover and goes for the kill. The first Cephalos reaches the baby and distracts it by spitting a mixture of sand and saliva stored in a second salivary gland at its eyes. The blinded calf screeches and tries to run but, being almost new-born, trips. The second Cephalos bites into the baby’s leg and shakes furiously.

Suddenly, the first Cephalos is flung through the air and smashes into a boulder, two massive puncture wounds located in its side. The rest of the pack roar and screech in alarm as they re-arrange themselves to face the threat. A huge, black diablos mother leans over the piscine wyvern that had the nerve to bite into its baby’s leg. The mother has a jet black colour during mating season but as it has a calf its normal brown seems to be returning nevertheless, most of its rear and its entire head is still as black as night. She shakes her head and screams loud enough to be heard for miles around. The Cephalos freezes; immobilized by the extreme sound blasting its eardrums. The mother leaps and crushes the sand-fish with her 9 ton body. The Cephadrome recovers from the scream leaps at the enraged wyvern and sinks its teeth into her back; the mother cries in pain and smashes her tail randomly, the lethal club smashing an observing Cephalos in the face, crushing its skull. The Jet-black diablos rolls, crushing the Cephadrome and furthermore pinning it to the ground by her immense weight. When the Cephadrome manages to pull itself out of rock and sand it rapidly scans the area. No diablos. No Cephalos pack. Just bodies of the unfortunate sand wyverns. The Cephadrome begins to walk out into deep sand…BAM! The black diablos bursts out of the sand; skewering the sand wyvern...

The diablos mother sleeps with her calf in the cave peacefully as the sub-zero temperatures of the night settle in for the next ten hours…

Diablos, Cephalos and Cephadrome all belong to Capcom from their game ‘Monster hunter’. I do not own the monsters that appear in the fan fiction but I do own the story, NO TAKING/STEALING/FARTING/USING. Good day.
