Blueish-white light flashed, making my clutch my teddy bear, Cuddles, closer. I stared at the ceiling, my back resting on my bed. The covers were up to my nose as if it could protect me from lightning and thunder- and also because I couldn't breathe when the covers were over my head.
"One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississipp-"
The roar of the thunder suddenly crackled in my ears, making me cringe under the covers. I threw off the blankets and jumped out of bed. I slipped on my bunny slippers, holding Cuddles tightly to my chest while I ran out of my room.
I raced down the hallway as fast as my feet could carry me to my parents room and swung the door open. My mother whipped around at the speed of light, clutching a sharp metal weapon.
"Mommy!" I cried, shaken by the storm. She set down the weapon the bed while I sprinted towards her. Once I reached her, I wrapped my arms around her legs, shivering. She grasped my arms and pulled it apart, squatting down to reach my height. Her green-goldish eyes held fear and relief.
She put both hands on the sides of my head and leaned in, kissing my forehead. I felt something wet drip on my hair.
"Why are you crying?" I asked. "Mommies aren't afraid of thunder and lightning, right?"
"No, mommy is afraid of what is going to happen to you if monsters capture you." My mother murmured. I looked up at her pained eyes, nodding, confused.
"Oh, Evelyn, you're the sweetest thing that has happened to me." She cried, resting her forehead on mine. She pulled away and picked me up, and rested me against her chest as I wrapped my arms around her neck. "I love you so much, don't forget that."
I stroked her hair that was black as night, which I had gotten from her. I loved her hair because it was longer than mine.
"I love you more," I whispered. The lights suddenly flickered and shut off as lightning struck again. I whimpered and hugged her tighter. Thunder released another bellow and I closed my eyes tightly. Once the sound was over, I opened my eyes as adjusting to the darkness.
My mother hurriedly sped-walk out of the room and down the hallway. She stopped once she reached the banister which where she stood overlooked upon the first floor. She shifted my body so she held me with one arm. She used one hand to grasp the banister and jumped up on it.
She determinedly kept her eyes on the chandelier, and bent her knees, powerfully pushing off. She flew in the air before reaching the chandelier and grasping onto the chain with one hand. Her feet struggled to to use the top of the chandelier as a foot holder as it dangerously swung back and forth.
'EEEERK. EEEERK,' the chain groaned deeply from the years of old age and weight. She continued to climb up the chain with one arm. Her head hit the ceiling, making something hiss as the part of the ceiling drew apart, revealing a gap in the ceiling. It revealed that the chain was longer, and my mother continued to climbing up with a bit of struggle.
She then set me to her left above the ceiling-floor, which held a dark passageway.
"I love you," she whispered, and lightning flashed again and thunder crackled again. My mother slid down the chain and as I tried to reach for her, the floor, which was the ceiling, closed, leaving me in the darkness without my mother.
That was the last time I ever saw her. Little did I know that it led to the beginning of the end of my father, and that her ending was my beginning.
