Chapter 10 ∣ My Vow
-Lucca
At this point, any news is good news. Understanding that if Evie doesn't use her blood magic, she has a chance at surviving this pregnancy. Not only do I have to worry about her, but I'm in a constant state of apprehension about the fate of Locaine and Annika. What if we've been away too long? What if the hunters manage to come after the coven and annihilate them...I know that can't possibly be true, as I haven't felt any disconnection with any of them.
Except for Killian.
Killian's existence flickers in and out, making me wonder exactly what he's doing. Hopefully, he isn't getting in over his head and protecting the rest of the coven with Michael and Kato.
"I'm sorry we have to take the long way," Evie whispers, sitting comfortably on my lap sideways, cuddling up under a warm blanket and against my chest.
Glancing away from the horizon and down at my angel, I smile and state, "That is not your fault. It isn't expected of you to take on the world by yourself. That's what I'm here for."
"I'm still mad at you for not telling me the truth," her cute face turns into a playful anger toward me.
If I had told you prior to leaving and crossing the large expanse of water...
...who knows if we would have made it. We very well could have easily been cast into the water.
"I'm sorry angel, but you know I always have my reasons," I place my lips gently against her forehead, lingering for a moment and enjoying being close to her. Yes, there is plenty of vexation around us, but at this moment, I can just relax for a second and enjoy being with my one true love and beloved. I can't imagine a life without her in it...
"We should be arriving in another hour or so," Erebus speaks, walking around the center seating and asking, "It's rather cold out, do the two of you want to head down below and stay warm?"
Just for good measure, Evie shivers against me, her eyes looking up at me longingly, the spark igniting within her.
My eyes lift from hers and meet with Erebus' before asking, "Isabella and you?"
I can feel Evie digging her nails into my chest at my sudden concern for the two vampires who are taking us back home on their luxurious yacht.
I'm being polite.
Really...now's the time you're choosing to be polite?
"We'll be just fine," Erebus nods, Isabella standing from her chair and walking toward the helm. I hadn't thought about how they must have adjusted to the severity of this weather; the extreme cold is nothing we have dealt with in the past. Erebus then notes "Besides, we can tell the two of you are in desperate need of some alone time without the uncertainty of being attacked at any second."
See, he's totally fine with us banging...
Evicka!
She's showing no signs of releasing her nails from my chest, in fact, she's piercing them harder at my words.
"Uh," I'm at a loss for words.
Isabella smiles and states, "We're fine, trust me, it's nice being able to provide a safe place for the two of you. It seems like you've gone through enough."
It finally hits me and what they are getting at...
This might be the last time Evie and I will be together if the worst is to happen...
No.
I ignore the burning sensation within the bridge of my nose, fighting back any tears that surface. Nodding, I lift Evie, keeping her as close as possible to me, never wanting to let her go. The blanket holds in place as I walk toward the stairs leading down beneath the deck and into the lower passageway.
