Allison's POV
Allison was spooked. As much as she tried to play it off and act calm, the text really scared her. Her heart pounded a steady beat, radiating with the fear of being caught doing something wrong. Despite what it might seem like, Allison was a bit of a goody-two shoes. She'd never gotten a demerit, and her reputation appeared to be spotless. Just the thought of breaking the rules (besides eating in the library or anything food related) made her shake.
The eight friends had sat down on the curb, looking at each other awkwardly. Then, a faint 'bing' rang out. Allison turned towards the sound and saw Cat pulling out her phone in confusion. Her friend paled and her sparkling blue eyes grew wide. Without saying a word, Cat turned the screen to her friends.
"Don't look so shocked, you didn't really believe no one would find out would they?
Come clean , and just maybe, you'll save your own lives."
Nolan opened his mouth hesitantly, but he was cut off by a chorus of, "Absolutely not."
"We can't just tell the school we cheated," Allison hissed.
"I'm on my way to a scholarship, and this would ruin everything!" Douglas cried.
"We don't know if this person is serious, but I know my parents actually would kill me if they found out I cheated," Siddhart pitched.
"We didn't even cheat anyways, what do we have to worry about?" Cat proclaimed boldly.
All eyes turned to Cat.
Her voice dropped to a whisper that could barely be heard as she lectured, "To really tell a lie, you must believe the lie." Then, she raised her chin haughtily and spoke normally, "We studied really hard for that exam."
Allison nodded. After all, they really had worked for good grades. They really were the most brilliant people in The Academy. Their freshman Fall Exams scores had only served as a boost to get them to where they were.
"The reason we all got similarly high scores is because we studied together," Cat continued, "There's nothing to worry about. Nothing."
The group seemed to calm down a bit, but Allison noticed something that everyone looked over. Cat was just a freaked as the rest of them. Her jaw was set in determination, but her lower lip quivered slightly and her eyes held an expression equivalent to a deer in the headlights. Allison caught Cat's eye. Noticing Alessya's troubled stare as well, the three had an almost a telepathic conversation that only best friends could have. Alessya's raised eyebrows asked, "Should we confess?"
Cat only pursed her lips and looked to Allison.
She was confused. This could just be a prank but it could be something more.
"What should we do?"
Allison blushed uncomfortably when she realized she had said that aloud. "I don't know, guys. If it were real, we could be in trouble, but if it were just a cruel joke, we could get into real trouble."
Either way, there would be trouble.
