Chapter One.

I wish I never took anything for granted. I should've been more appreciative of the little things I had rather than taking advantage of them. I wish I had been more open-minded. Yet again, everyone makes mistakes. But sometimes mistakes can lead us to a better learning point, mistakes can make us stronger. No one grows up strong. Being strong isn't a built-in trait, you have to grow it yourself. To be strong, means to be well-kept and push through. A goal of mine is to always try and look on the better side, and make the best of every situation...To be stronger.

"Skye, can you look up- SKYE!" My mother yelled, catching my attention as she swerved the car a bit by her disgruntled manner. I put down my notebook and pen and look up to meet her eyes in the rear-view mirror of the car. I ran my fingers through the top of my hair, pulling my blonde hair back a bit which tucks slightly behind my ears. I sighed.

"What?" I questioned, scrunching my eyebrows together to show my irritability.  I'm not usually an irritable person, but being stuck in a car for 6 hours doesn't exactly make me the most joyful person to be around, especially with the cramped space I'm in.

"Could you please look up the nearest 4 star hotel? I don't want to stay in another trashy 2 star that has dead roaches under the chairs again." She complained, looking back at me from her seat in the car before fixing her eyes back to the road, which we almost drove off of again.

I purse my lips together and close my eyes, trying to keep my calm. This had been going on for hours. I'd write maybe 3 sentences down in my Thought Journal before my mother or 9 year old brother would interrupt me with silly questions or requests, considering I had the only decent phone in the car. Not to mention my mother did not  know how to drive long distances, which wasn't exactly safe for Jason and I. I suggested I drive, but she claims she's 'fine' and 'needs to do this on her own.'

"Skye, please." Jason, my little brother, groaned out.  I grumbled under my breath and handed him my green cracked iPhone C after deleting a few messages and pictures I didn't want him to see. Considering my friends knew my phone was going to go in and out of service, they didn't bother to text me this whole trip. So I didn't exactly have to worry about a text my brother would see from Jake or Lily saying, "I just made out with the hottest senior!" and other useless information that made me roll my eyes. Jason shrieked with joy when his hands came into contact with my phone.

"You do it, I'm tired." I mumbled, shifting my position in the backseat of the car so that I was laying down on my side. This was the only reason why I wanted the backseat in the first place, so I could sleep.

It was kind of funny when my mother told Jason about the trip. The 9 year old was thrilled to hear that he would be sitting shotgun while his 17 year old sister, me, would be in the back seat, all the way from Idaho Falls to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Which is an extremely long drive,  but considering it's more cheaper than a flight... We had to.

I wasn't complaining though, I was missing a solid 2 weeks of school because of this trip. After finding out that my cousin Jenny was getting married, there wasn't a doubt that my mother would want to go. My dad on the other hand, didn't hesitate to say no and is probably still sitting on his old recliner, downing God knows how many beers. The old man doesn't really care much about anything anymore, and it used to really concern me, but now I've just gone numb to the feeling. I yawned, my thoughts beginning to bore myself. I shifted yet again on the seats in the back.

My horizontal position in the backseat made it difficult to see, the only thing my eyes really came to contact with was a big billboard passing by a window reading:

"Visit the world's largest truck stop! Iowa 80, next exit!"

I sighed quietly, looking around once more before looking at my mom and brother in the front seat.

"Wake me up when we reach the hotel or a gas station or something." I mumble, my eyes getting heavier by the second.

"I will!" Jason announced, making me cringe slightly. How could a 9 year old be so damn loud?

I nod subtlety and close my eyes fully, letting the peaceful aura of sleep drift into my thoughts, relaxing me.

The car sped along the highway as I lulled off to a slumber that felt a bit different then normal.

----

The pair of boys trudged through the forest, frustrated with each other and their failure of such a simple task. They'd been snapping obscenities to each other like ping-pong ever since.

"Zach, It went down to the cove's water, I promise."

"No, you absurd little twig. I swear I heard the buck run this way."

"Why don't we just split up and hunt? That way one of us will be right, at least. And neither one of our head's gets put on Pan's platter."

"Good idea. I'll get the meadow clearing, you go wherever the hell you want."

"My god Zach, stop being so ignorant. I'll just come with you."

"Good, to the meadow it is. And when I shoot the buck, you owe me two free rounds with an apple on your head."

"Dude, shut up. Look, it's laying in the weeds. Take your shot."

The pair crept closer, but quickly the leader came to an abrupt stop, making the younger one pause.

"That isn't a buck, Vandin."

Silence enveloped the two as they both curiously stepped toward the form laying in the meadow, keeping their guards up.

They both approached the figure from the side, their bows raised in case a threat was provoked. Gasps emitted from the two when the form came into focus.

"Is that...?" The younger boy trailed off, his jaw agape.

"Vandin, go get the boys. This, could be a very  bad situation.

The 14 year old nodded and swallowed nervously as his Adam's apple bobbled, then looked back down to what they both discovered.

A 17 year old girl, unconscious in the meadow.
