I never stuck out at home. I was always in the background of everything, and everyone. I wish I could say I was important, but really I was never a noticeable girl...Always have been, always will be...Or so I thought. My features were average. Clothes, also average. The time I was finally acknowledged by my peers was when I was I turned 15. I rid my closet of the pants that were too small and the shirts that were too large. I highlighted my dirty blonde hair that was reaching the small of my back. My facial features matured as my some-what hazel eyes began to pop out more. As I hit puberty, the boys in high school began to stare and the girls began to glare. I was just 'that' girl. The one who kept her distance because she didn't want anymore problems than she had at home.
Of course, I made a few close friends throughout my freshman and sophomore year. Not too many, but enough to keep myself entertained for the many hours I spent in the public building I referred to as hell. Everyday was the same, I followed an almost daily routine and nothing ever changed.
But here, in 'Neverland' as Pan claims, was entirely different. I stuck out like the only color in a 1950's black-and-white film. Every movement I made was noticed by all of the people around me. Each boy eyed me like I was some kind of foreign terrorist.
I didn't even notice the odd behavior until I sat down after Pan's little 'announcement' on one of the many logs surrounding the large fire pit in front of my feet. There were about 3 boys to the left of me on a different log, who all stiffened when I seated myself by them. It almost appeared that they held their breath as soon as I entered their ozone. The three eyed me for a split-second, then looked at each other and in sync, abruptly stood up and scurried off into the seemingly never-ending jungle.
It took me by surprise, the way they reacted to me. It felt as if just my presence was so disturbingly unfamiliar to the boys that they couldn't even be within 20 feet of me. I figured it was my clothing, I was dressed quite different from them. Yet again, black shorts and a white some-what larger shirt isn't exactly different. My grey boots almost matched their's, mind the color. But ever since that whole incident, I'd been sitting here for the past half hour. I didn't know what to do. I was powerless to my own mind on what actions I should take.
The whole situation had frazzled me to the point where even thinking about trying to go home gave me the largest headache. The 'Pan' boy had ran off to a trail in the forest soon after his little meeting with his little clan to announce my sudden appearance. As much as I hated to admit, I knew I had to speak with him again in order to clear some of the many swirling questions bothering me beyond measure. Unfortunately, I didn't know where he was.
A plundering of footsteps shook me from the depths of my mind as I quickly looked up from my feet to focus on the reality in front of me.
A small group of 4 to 5 boys were sprinting to their small hut-shelters, looks of fear clearly spread across their faces.
I quickly stood up, my breath quickening as I looked around.
"What's going on?" I instinctively asked.
2 of the boys popped out from their huts quickly, wielding bows. They began to jog back to the path until they saw me, and halted quickly in their tracks. Their eyes grew large as they locked with mine. I noted one of them was taller than the other, he had shaggy blonde hair that almost covered his eyes. The shorter one was a red head with freckles dotting his nose. They had to be at least 15 to 16. I pursed my lips and raised my eyebrows, queuing them to answer my question.
The red head elbowed the taller one to answer as he squared his shoulders, his face flushed. The blonde widened his eyes.
"I-uh, We gotta go back to Pan." He stuttered out quickly. The red head nodded and the two shared a look, then sprinted back to the path, holding their bows in front of them.
