Chapter Forty-Five: The truth about Hunter Ryan

I walked in with Abby as the latest music began to play and people started breaking off into groups to talk and dance.

I didn't really know what to say. It was a really lovely gesture of Abby but no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't get over that picture and everything I'd been told about Hunter. Seeing him didn't help either.

Hunter came up to me and hugged me, almost instantly. I leaned back a little uncomfortably, trying to get away from the smell of his cologne that I usually always loved. Now all it did was make me sick.

"Happy birthday," he smiled causing me to clench my teeth together, forcing back my anger as he seemed to lie to my face. All I wanted to do was yell at him and tell him I never wanted to see him again and how I was an idiot to trust him and I wish we'd never been partnered together in science - but, I didn't want to cause a scene and ruin this party when Abby had obviously worked hard putting it together for me.

"Where are the drinks?" I asked Abby.

"In the kitchen, I'll take you there if you like," she replied.

I nodded and I breathed a sigh of relief, finally being able to get away from Hunter's presence.

When we reached the kitchen, Abby handed me a drink.

"Thank you, for this," I said to her. "I'm sorry if I didn't seem to appreciate it before, I've just been feeling a little... Run down."

Abby took a drink for herself. "Are you sick?"

'Don't bring it up Naomi, not right now,' I thought. "Yeah, something like that."

"Well if you feel yourself getting worse, just tell me and I'll take you home."

"Thanks Abby." I hugged her, grateful for having a friend like her. "Thanks again for putting this whole thing together."

"Oh it wasn't just me."

I leaned back, "It wasn't?"

"No," she smiled. "I mean yeah, I organised it and everything because I love this kind of thing. But it was really Hunter's idea."

Of course it was. His idea to distract me from the fact he's been with someone else?

"He came and told me about the whole idea and we went from there."

"You two are talking again?" I asked.

"Believe me, it surprises me too," Abby took a sip of her drink. "But I forgot to mention to you - he apologised to me, properly, for everything."

"When?" I asked curiously.

"On retreat. To think our relationship ended because of a stupid bet." Abby shook her head to herself.

"Bet?"

Abby looked at me then gestured over towards a nearby couch. I walked over and sat down with her.

"As it turns out," began Abby, "Hunter made out with that girl I saw him with because of a bet."

'Late December...

"Still can't believe how whipped you are."

Hunter sighed, "Would you just cut it out already Eric?" He gave the cashier some money to pay for the movie tickets and then walked away with Eric.
