I woke up a little bit before day break. Everyone was sound asleep. At first, I didn't know where I was or how I got there. A few seconds later, the events from last night registered their way into my head. The boat, the hole, and the sunken ship all were synced with my mind.
By now I lost all sense of direction, because all I could see was blue. Blue water and blue sky was the only thing that my eyes received. I was bored of it.
I noticed that my throat was really dry, and that I was thirsty. I took the desalinator out from the cabinet and tried to figure out how it worked. It looked like a floatie with and orange base, and a clear dome that water entered into.
A tube extended out of it where we would drink.I put it in the water for a while, and waited for it to fill up. After a few minutes, I tasted it. As soon as it hit my taste buds I spit it out. No change. As salty as ever.
I woke up Jasmine and asked her how this worked. She studied it for awhile, and said, "It needs to be blown up more."
I filled it with air, and retried. This time, when the water entered, it felt cool and refreshing. The feeling was amazing. I felt relieved, and my mouth was now moist.
Jasmine took a few sips, while I woke everyone else up to drink. By now, the sun had risen, and the glare coming off of the water from the sun was intolerable. It was like stabbing your eyes with knives over and over again. I took an extra layer off and soaked it with water. It was getting really hot, and my wet shirt relieved me of the burning on my neck.
After everyone took a drink, we began to evaluate the issue. We were probably 20-30 miles from shore now. We didn't see any hope of seeing the San Fransisco beach for at least a day or two, if we ran into somebody. This was bad. If we weren't found in a few days, we could be in serious trouble.
"I'm bored," Emily said as she began to take out her phone.
"What are you doing!" I screamed, reaching for her hand with the phone in it. "Save the battery for when it's really needed.""Ugh. Fine, but don't complain when I start getting all jumpy," Emily said reluctantly. She put the phone in her back pocket for later. How could she want to go on her phone at a time like this? She is so ignorant!
We all started to get hungry, and we felt weak. Jasmine even threw up overboard. Actually, she dry heaved since there was nothing left in her stomach.
"I'm starving!" Ryan Whined.
"We will run into somebody soon hun," I reassured him. He crept over to the front of the boat, clutching his stomach. He leaned over the boat and heaved. We all decided that we shouldn't paddle because we could be going in the wrong direction, taking us farther from home.
The rest of the day was a mixture of us heaving, or complaining of how hungry we were. The sun had burned us all on our necks, legs, and forearms. Our skin was peeling, and was extremely sensitive to the touch.
As the sun set, our eyes were finally relieved from the piercing glare of the reflection from the water. However, as night fell upon us, it grew cold. All of us were shivering like crazy. If we didn't do anything about it, we would get hypothermia.
"I'm c-c-cold!" Hannah shrieked. She looked pale, and had purple bags hanging over her eyes. Also, her nose and her ears were red, and they were rubbed raw from the wind that blew past us. She looked the worst out of the rest of us. I worried about her wellbeing.
We looked further into the boat incase we missed something like blankets or hand warmers. Unfortunately, the cabinet was empty except for the 10 lifejackets on the side compartment.
"Hey! Why don't we tie the lifejackets together and make some sort of cover to make us warmer?" Emily suggested.
"Great idea Em!" Hannah said.Whatever. I rolled my eyes and began to tie them together. I knew that the life jackets would have no effect, and that we would be shivering throughout the night.
As we got into bed, I wondered if anyone was looking for us. Would we ever be found? Or would we die off one by one in this massive ocean?
I felt so alone.
