Chapter 15

The word hate is too hateful to describe the way I’m feeling about this dress. Dislike, maybe. But at the same time, I feel some ambivalence towards it, not knowing whether I like it or not. Judging by Chase’s peeking eyes, I’ll say he’s more on the liking it side.

“And a turn, right?”

“Right,” I tell Chase as he parks in front of Barbara’s house. I’m surprised I have the house memorized. Well, my dad has driven her home with me in the back numerous times, so it’s no surprise really.

Chase pulls the key from the car after spraying some heavenly perfume. A few other cars are parked outside of her house as well, I realize as I step outside.

Chase takes my hand and looks me over.

“You look stunning, Kamryn.”

Chase looks stunning himself, working the suit and tie with the burgundy and black mixed in well. His stubble is to the minimum, which makes him look even manlier. He smells of aftershave swirled in with his scent, which creates something comfortable.

Chase takes the bag from my hand, offering to hold it for me.

“You look very handsome yourself. I can’t believe she made this ‘strictly formal wear’.” Just as I’m about to trip over my whining, Chase reaches for me without fail. I pull my dress down with my heart beating in my ears.

“I’m sorry,” I apologize. I examine the mud pasted to my heel. With a mental groan, I bend down with the support of Chase. “This is not my day.”

“Kamryn. Kamryn.” He says my name a couple of times, and I don’t respond. “Kamryn, look at me, don’t worry.”

“I’m just not used to this sort of thing.”

In a couple of seconds, Chase pulls me up by the arm, bends down, and crashes his lips on mine. I lightly moan, surprised but amazed at the revival of this addicting feeling. His tongue enters my mouth, and I do the same, not exactly knowing what I’m doing but good enough to have him continue rubbing my arms which are filled with goose bumps now.

We pull away, and I’m almost knocked out by the perfection of that moment of a few seconds.

“Are you okay?”

“Great,” I say, fighting to sustain my posture and resist jumping on him in public.

“Now let’s hurry and get into somewhere populated, so it’s easier to resist doing something else to you in public.” I take hold of all my hormones, and refuse to think of the “something else” before getting too excited.

He takes hold of my hand and walks towards the front door of Barbara’s. From within the house, my dad’s voice is apparent and loud as well as Barbara’s.

I press the doorbell once, and the door swings open with a smiling father on the other side. Slowly, his smile subsides into a neutral line when his eyes catch our locked hands.

“Hello, Dad,” I greet him, letting go of Chase.

After a moment of awkward introductions, my dad pulls me to the side. “Are you two a couple?” he asks. No lying.
