The weapon part of hunting was easy. Roma's knife, now Feliciano's, would be a wonderful tool and advantage when looking for food. There was only one downside.
It was still covered in his brother's blood.
It was dry, now--but the sight of it still made the poor boy cringe. To keep from his food from getting infected, he rubbed the blood off with his shirt as best as he could. There was still the occasional speck, of course; but it was much cleaner than before.
The wind blew through the tall grass, sending the noise of fluttering stems and the tips of the grass brushing together spiraling through the air. Through the whirlwind of whistling grass, Feliciano could see two brown furry ear tips sticking straight up. Thank god, he thought. Maybe I won't starve. He crept towards the hare.
And he stepped on a twig.
The animal bolted, seemingly no more than a ball of fur across the meadow, with Feliciano close behind it. All those years of running away must've paid off. He was an exceptional runner. Launching himself onto the creature, he whirled out his knife in quick succession and--
Just before he struck, the world shifted.
He was back in his dream.
His nightmare.
Instead of the knife plunging into the rabbit, it plunged into his screaming child, Jamie. Everything seemed to go in slow motion. Feliciano could see every drop of blood sputter from Jamie's head. He was forced to watch as his lifeless body crumpled to the ground once again. Feliciano covered his mouth in shock as tears came to his eyes.
The world shifted once again, the rabbit lain dead before the quivering man.
"I...I'm..." He was frozen. With the tears climbing out one by one, he sniffed, trying the stop them.
"I'm sorry." Feli pushed the poor animal away. He couldn't eat it. Not now. Not after he brutally murdered his child.
He crumpled up into a ball of tears on the ground, emotionless. He laid there for the night, cold, hungry, regretting every step he would take tomorrow before he even took them.
    "I'm sorry, Jamie,"
     He squeezed his eyes tight.
    "I'm sorry, Ludwig."
