When all of the chaos of my family moving back in my house was completed, we made our way to Hunter’s house.

God, just saying his name made me feel queasy.

When we arrived, my parent’s flashed their smiles as Renée opened the giant door.

“Welcome! Come in, come in!” She said, waving her hands in a “come in” motion.

My family stepped inside, and the mansion was completely different from the last time I was in it. And last time I was in it, it was a teenage wasteland. There was faint dining music in the background somewhere and there were so many old people decked out in black dresses and suits. This seemed like an old-aged home party, where the rich talk among themselves in stuffed up tones.

Renée seemed to have recognized my expression, because she immediately said,

“Oh don’t worry, kid’s party is downstairs.” She smiled and walked off with my mother and father, leaving Ryan and I to find the basement alone.

“Okay, where’s this basement that bombshell is talking about?” Ryan asked, a hint of a smirk on his face.

I punched him in the arm hard, making sure he felt it. He just shrugged, leaving the devilish smirk.

“I don’t know, this house is pretty big.” I said, then realizing that I had said too much. Ryan was a smart guy, hence the college at the young age of eighteen.

“Wait, you’ve been here before?”

“Uh, sort of.” I said, walking off to find the basement. I walked near the stairs that led up to the large balcony, and there was a closed door…vibrating.

Ryan came up to me then and seeming like he knew everything, opens the door up and walks through.

“Ryan! You can’t just go in there without knowing where it leads!” I hissed, having no choice but to follow him. When we reached the end of the staircase that led down to a dark room, the whole basement had turned into a nightclub.

Multicolored lights danced around the room and I spotted a DJ in the back corner mixing up his tunes.

“Whoa! Who are these people? And who’s their kid?” Ryan asked to no one in particular. Suddenly, a figure popped up out of nowhere.

“That would be me.” Hunter said, his attention on Ryan.

“Dude this is sick, where have you been all my life?” Then, a girl that looked oddly familiar strode up towards Ryan and led him off to who knows where, leaving Hunter and I alone.

My heart sped up fast, and I didn’t know why. I tried to find an outlet where I could make up an excuse, but all I found was people dancing and grinding on each other. Besides, I couldn’t avoid him forever now, could I?

“Um, hey,” I started off, wondering why I had just started the conversation.

“Hey.” He replied simply, leaving the feel of this moment extremely awkward.

“Your parent’s invited my family over here, so, uh, thanks for inviting us…” Oh God, I’m such a freak. I can’t even talk to this guy anymore. I’m just so tired of being mean to him all this time that it just needed to stop.

“Yeah, I know.” That was all he said, and I started to bite the inside of my cheek, then grabbing my right forearm.

“Okay, well I’ll see you later then…” I tried to finish, turning on my heel to go.

“Lauren, can I talk to you for a minute?” I turned back around then, and even though it was dark in the room, he seemed to glow.

“Sure.” I said, letting him lead the way. He walked toward the end of the room to open a door. He walked with a sort of purpose, like he wanted to get something over with.

I stepped inside, and the space resembled a dark room where photographs were processed. There was a faint tint of red in the room, and to me it kind of looked, romantic? I didn’t know if that’s even the right word for it.

I sat down on a black leather sofa near the wall. Hunter pulled up a chair in front of me and sat down. I expected him to wait for a moment to collect his thoughts, but he was full of surprises these days.

“Lauren, it took me a long time to figure you out. It’s also taken me a long time to tell you this. I’ve re-run this whole conversation out loud and in my head, that it’s just too much. So I’m going to tell you the truth and the reason why.” I just sat there, attentive to what he was saying. He was making me nervous, and not in a good way.

“I love you.” He said those three words like they meant the whole world to him. He sighed when the words left his lips, and then he dipped his head. I was too shocked to even believe what he said was real.

“I – I’m sorry? What did you just say?” I didn’t really want to hear him say it again, but I had to let the words sink in.

“I said I love you,” he said, lifting his head back up. “I know this might come to you in a shock, but it’s true. And I have for many years. I just didn’t have the guts to ask you out, and then when I found out you hated me, I just couldn’t live with myself.”

“So you ask out my best friend?” I asked, confused.

“It’s not like that, I asked – ”

“I don’t care what you asked, I want to know why in the world would you ask out Viktoria when you just confessed the biggest thing in your life?”

He remained silent, and I couldn’t look at him. I felt a tear run down my cheek, but I quickly wiped it away.

“Don’t cry, please. I – I can explain…”

“Save it.” I said, standing up to walk out the door. But he beat me to it, standing in my way. My eyelids were filling up with wetness, and I just wanted to scream.

“Let me through!” I said, hitting him hard in the chest. “Let…me…through!” I cried, letting the tears spill. Soon I had no strength to hit him anymore, so I stopped. I cupped my hands over my face and cried, and soon I felt myself being pulled in tight.

I could feel his heartbeat, and it was racing like mine had been. His warm arms and body heat caressed me and I just let it be while I sobbed in his shirt. I felt his chin rest on the crown of my hair, and I felt myself wrap my hands around him. At that point I didn’t hate him; I just wanted to be near him.

As I cried in Hunter’s embrace, I found out that I wanted to stay like that for the rest of the night.
