Characters Part Two

This is the part where you learn to shape up your One Direction boys. This chapter will hold some of the things that irk me most about fan fiction. Here you will learn to not make the boys look like shallow clowns, like I see in so many fan fictions.

Harry

Cue the flip of the cherubic curls, the sly smile, the ovary stealing dimples, and the heavenly emerald eyes. This is where we will discuss the characterizing of the one and only, Harry Styles.

Harry the Heartbreaker. Or so the stories portray him. Most fan fiction you read will portray Harry as a horny, sex crazed lunatic... or a lesser version of that. Some people don't understand that, though he may be a horny part of the male species, the inner-workings of his mind aren't about the next female he can jump. Just like any other person, Harry has fears, emotions, feelings, aspirations. You should make sure that your Harry character shows depth in that, make sure that he thinks, that he isn't a sex crazed lunatic.

Louis

Lou, Lou, Lou. One Direction's very own brainchild of Where’s Waldo? And Peter Pan. There have been many horrible misconceptions threaded into fan fiction about this boy.

First off, pigeons. I understand about Kevin, I really do, but it's time to let it go. Do you really think that if Lou spots a pigeon, no matter where he is or what he's doing, that he'll drop everything and run after it, chanting Kevin? No, he will not. Yet, for some odd reason, that seems to be in every fan fiction. Stop with the pigeon shit, it was only funny when Lou did it and he doesn't anymore, in which case, it isn't funny. If you want to retain any dignity you might have, do not have outrageous pigeon scenes in your fan fiction.

Secondly, carrots. Louis mentions once, on a video diary, that he loves carrots and all the sudden Louis is just a carrot obsessed, two dimensional boy. Most fan fictions, as with the pigeon shit, just have Louis spouting off about carrots. Think of your favorite food of all time. Got it in your mind? Good, now let me ask you this: how many times each day do you mention, or even think, about that food? Maybe once, twice, or not at all? And you definitely don't run around screaming about it, do you? Thought not. So, please, keep carrots out of your fan fiction unless they are merely eaten in passing.

Lastly, Louis the Comic. I think we all understand that all of the boys enjoy a bit of fun, especially Louis, but that doesn't mean he's like that all the time. As I mentioned with harry, Louis is a complex person, just like you and I. He isn't always a joker, he gets sad, he becomes serious. You should show Louis' serious side in your fan fiction, or he shall be threatened into being a two dimensional character.

Niall

Cue the swooning and sighs, along with the heart melting Irish accent and crystalline blue eyes. These are the misconceptions about our favorite Irishman.

Niall the Devourer. This is pretty much like Louis with carrots. Niall, in most fan fiction, can't stop talking about food, looking at food, and most importantly, eating food. It's as if Niall is some character who is purely in the story to offhandedly complain about being hungry. I won't write any more, since you can basically refer to Louis the Carrot Lover up there for my explanation on how not to make Niall a shallow consumer.

Zayn

The resident bad boy of One Direction. Cue the drool and heart shaped eyes, we're getting ready to dissect the portrayal of Zayn Malik.

Vain Zayn. When I find myself reading fan fiction, I coincidentally always find myself stuck in a scene where Zayn complains like a little girl about his hair or his looks. I know that the boy likes his looks, and yes, he primps, but, by God, my gay friend doesn't even primp as much as Zayn does in fan fiction! That's saying something. Calm yo tits with Zayn screaming and wailing when he gets a dust mote on his hair, capeesh? It's just not realistic and, quite frankly, it makes One Direction look even worse to the people that already hate them. Give the poor guy a break.

Liam

The puppy dog eyes, the pout, the dashing looks, and sweet personality. It's time to talk about our very own Liam Payne.

Actually, come to think of it, I haven't come across any ridiculous situations surrounding Liam in fan fiction. He's even perfect in fan fiction. So I guess that's that.
