-Avery
After school, I walked home by myself, and Autumn stayed at school for softball practice. The guys were planning to come over later, and by guys I mean my bandmates. We usually hung out after school, whether it was for practice or to just hang.
When I entered my house, I flopped on the couch and turned the television on. Both my parents were out at work or whatever they did, so I used that time as relaxation. I stared blankly at the screen, completely bored. I checked my phone for the seventh time, still not seeing a single text message.
After a long time of boredom, I heard a loud know on the front door, and guys screaming my name. I hurriedly answered the door, letting in my bandmates. The three guys instantly came in without asking, but I was fine with it.
"Wanna go check out some hot chicks at the mall?" Ash asked, smirking deviously.
"Maybe later," Reese answered, sitting upside down on the couch as he watched whatever was on the television screen."I wanna watch this first." No one actually corrected Reese; we were all used to his unusualness.
"Do you have any chips, Av?" Corey asked me, stretched out on the other couch.
"Yeah, in the cabinet." I sat between Reese and Ash, watching intently at the strange show Reese was watching. I gave him a look."Reese, why are those guys sinking in quicksand?"
"I've watched this movie dozens of times. They're on a hiking trip, and they're the first of many to get killed by the island nature." Reese turned and looked at me, excitement in his eyes."Wait until you see how the Perkins family dies!"
Shaking my head, I took my focus away from Reese to look at Corey, who had left and came back with a family size bag of chips."Mind sharing some?" I asked, motioning for him to come sit with us. He did as I wanted and we ate the chips like the animals we were.
"Okay, we can go now," Reese said, standing up."After the tsunami, the movie kinda goes downhill."
"To the chicks!" Ash exclaimed, following Reese to the door.
Corey walked behind me, and I could tell he didn't want to come. Corey had his heart set on Autumn, and nothing could change that. Corey and I weren't that close, but I made sure to look out for him.
At the mall, the guys and I sat on a bench, watching as the people walked by us. Ash had a devious look on his face as he watched girls go by, and I was partially disgusted. Ash was pretty much a pervert. He was so bad, I wouldn't even let him date Autumn, and that was saying something.
"You really want to do this, Ash?" I questioned, giving him a look.
"Of course!" He said with a chuckle."I'm single, and Ash doesn't do single."
"I don't really care," Reese said with a shrug."I'm just here to watch Ash get slapped."
"Hey! I will not get slapped." Ash stood up, glaring down at Reese."It may happen often, but not this time!" Ash turned around, scanning the mall. A small smirk formed on his face as he said,"See y'all suckers later." Then, he ran towards a tall blonde girl texting on her phone.
"With the looks on that girl, he'll never last," Corey said, getting a laugh from Reese and I.
"Are you gonna try for a girl, Avery?" Reese asked me, smiling.
"I don't know," I said, unsure. Lately, I hadn't seen a girl that interested me, not that I was actually looking.
"Please, the Grand Master doesn't have to "try" for girls!" Corey said, mostly to Reese."The girls have to try for him!"
"As flattering as that is, it's not that easy." I stood up."It's possible, but not easy." I turned around, and suddenly ran straight into a girl.
"Oh!" She said, taking a step back.
"Sorry," I said, putting my hands up.
"It's fine!" The girl looked me up and down, slowly grinning."You're kinda cute."
Did I say it's not that easy? Well apparently, it is!
The girl twirled her hair a little, smirking at me."Do you want to maybe get something to eat?"
"Yeah, sure," I agreed, trying to keep the laugh from escaping my mouth. There I was, trying to explain to my friends that getting a girl wasn't that easy, and this girl just comes along.
The girl grabbed my hand and literally dragged me with her, smiling brightly. I looked back at the guys, internally laughing at there expressions.
Ahead, Ash was standing by himself, rubbing his cheek with a pained look on his face. When he noticed me, he had the same dumbfound look as Reese and Corey, but he soon replaced it with a, wait-a-go-man look. At that moment, I did feel like the Grand Master.
The girl's name was Kristen, or Kristy for short. She looked like she died the bottom of her hair blonde, and the rest a dark brown. She was flirting with me nonstop, and it was kind of annoying. I wasn't sure if I even liked her, but I wasn't the kind of guy to just walk away.
"So, do you want to see a movie some time?" Kristy asked, sipping her drink.
"Um, I'm not sure." I looked around, trying to make up an excuse.
"Oh, come on! Who doesn't want to see a movie?"
I figured I might as well give the girl a chance. Besides, I couldn't think of a reason to say no."Alright, I'll see a movie."
"Totes awesome!" Kristen took out a pen and started writing on a napkin. She handed it to me when she was done, a wide grin on her face."Call me."
I nodded."I should get going. My friends are waiting for me."
"Okay." Kristen stood up as I did."I guess I'll see you around then."
"Yeah, guess you will."
The guys were huddled around me, trying to pry information out of me. Ash was wanted Kristen's number to flirt, Corey wanted to know how it went, and Reese - well, he was being Reese. I pushed them away as I walked towards the mall exit.
"So are you going to call her?" Ash asked, catching up to me.
"I don't know. She seemed too bubbly to me." I ran my hand through my hair.
"Dude!" Ash exclaimed."Those are the best!"
"Does her number have a five in it?" Reese asked, shaking his hair from his face.
"Um, yeah," I said awkwardly, raising my eyebrow.
Reese pumped his fist in the air."Yes!"
"Look guys, I just sang to go home right now." I gave them a glare, letting them know I was mad with them. They quickly quieted down, and we made our way to Reese's car.
After a short car ride, Reese dropped me off at my house. Him and the guys then left for his house, which was a few minutes away. I walked into my house, laid on my couch, turning the television on. I heard footsteps upstairs, so I knew Autumn was home.
Autumn and I were still weird around each other. So far we had kissed twice, and Autumn was in total denial. I was confused, but I felt like a different person around her. In a way, I felt like I wasn't me.
Autumn soon came into view, stopping in her tracts when she saw me. She was wearing a tank top and shorts, practice clothes for softball. She gave me a hard look, which only made me smile.
"Hello, gorgeous," I said, smirking.
Autumn groaned before heading for the kitchen."Shut up." She walked into the kitchen, and I heard her opening drawers and cabinets.
I suddenly became serious."Autumn, I think we should sit down and talk."
"Avery, I told you-"
"It doesn't have to be about the kiss," I quickly interrupted."Just have a regular conversation like a normal brother and sister."
Autumn took a long time before answering."Fine. I'll get snacks." Autumn came from the kitchen with a bowl of chips and a small container of salsa. She set them in between us and sat across from me on the couch.
"How was practice?" I asked after a while.
"It was good. Hot." Autumn picked up a chip and slowly chewed on it."Uh, what did you do today?"
"I hung out with the guys," I said, eating a chip.
"My drawings are getting better," Autumn said, drawing circles on her leg.
"Cool. The band's getting some good lyrics." Autumn nodded, not looking at me. We fell into another dreadful silence, which seemed to pierce the air.
"Did Mom get off of work yet?" Autumn asked shyly.
"Not yet." I looked up at my sister, watching her eat the chips slowly."Have you. Spoke to Ellie lately?"
"At school." Autumn crossed her legs, wiggling her toes."Did you-"
"Okay, this is way too awkward," I blurted out, waving my hands.
"Gosh, I thought it was just me!" Autumn sighed with relief.
"I think we both know what we want to talk about," I said, smirking at her. She blushed and looked away.
"Alright, I admit, I did kiss you back, but I don't know what I was thinking." Autumn rubbed her forehead, thinking.
"Me either."
My eyes wandered to chip bowl, which only had one chip left inside. Instantly I reached to take it, just as Autumn did. We reached it at the same time, our hands slightly touching. We glared at each other like any brother and sister would do.
"I want the chip," Autumn said, narrowing her eyes at me.
"I want the chip," I said, unable to hold back my smirk. I leaned in a little.
"It's mine, Avery." Autumn leaned in too, glaring even harder. She picked up the chip and started bringing it to her mouth.
I grabbed her wrist to stop her, not hard, but enough to make her drop the chip back into the bowl."I don't think so." It was then that I noticed how close we were. My nose was almost touching Autumn's, and we stared into each others eyes. Autumn's breathing became thicker, and her glare faded away.
I suddenly felt a strange desire, a want for something. Our lips were close to touching, and the whole house went quiet, waiting with anticipation. I could feel Autumn's heart rate from her wrist, and it was going pretty fast. Before we could get any further, there was a Low knock on the door, which seemed loud in the quiet house.
"I'll get the door," Autumn whispered, not taking her eyes off of me. I slowly let go of her wrist, and we inched away from each other. Autumn got up to answer the door, leaving me to wonder what I had almost gotten into.
"Dean's here," Autumn said lowly, coming into view with her boyfriend. Dean smiled at me and sat on the opposite couch, pulling Autumn with him.
"Hey, pretty boy," I said, keeping calm.
I tried to focus on the television, but it was impossible. Dean constantly was kissing Autumn, whether it was on the cheek or on the lips. Autumn seemed too distracted by me to pay full attention to him, and I was sure Dean noticed.
Dean used to be the bad boy of our school; in gangs, robberies, and other criminal things. Supposedly he had changed, but I didn't believe him. No one could change as much as he did in a matter of months. It's like he wasn't himself anymore. And knowing that he was dating my sister was just infuriating.
Suddenly, the rage and anger inside of me disappeared, replaced by a deep sinking feeling in my chest. It felt like years of depression weighing down on me. The longer I continued to watch the couple, the more the feeling in my chest worsened. Soon, it was unbearable for me to just stay there.
I stood up, not looking at the two."I'll be in my room," I said quietly, already marching upstairs.
I laid on my bed in my room, covering my face with a random book. The pain in my chest wasn't like anything I had felt before, but I had heard about it. No matter how much I wanted to deny it, I knew the truth. The pain in my chest was because of Autumn. Seeing her with Dean made me depressed. Why did I even care? She was sister.
"Autumn's got me going insane," I thought aloud with a sigh.
"Avery!" Autumn called from downstairs.
"What?" I responded, sitting up.
"Mom's home." I heard her footsteps as she ran up the stairs. She knocked on my door before coming in."Dinner will be ready soon."
I nodded."Is Dean still here?"
"No. He doesn't want to run into Dad when he gets home." Autumn looked me up and down, confused."Are you okay?"
I nodded again."I just have a pain in my chest."
Autumn sat next to me on my bed, looking at her feet. She was the first one to speak after a long silence."You know we almost kissed again."
"Yeah, I know," I said, tossing my book to the side.
"Avery?" Autumn looked up at me, a serious look on her face.
"What?"
Autumn's mouth quivered slightly."Are you jealous of Dean?"
I frowned."Why would I be jealous of Curly?"
"Open your eyes, Avery!" Autumn stood in front of me, her arms crossed."You left when Dean came over, you have chest pains, and you're probably up here talking to yourself!" A flash of fear crossed Autumn's face as she glared at me, but quickly disappeared."Admit it, you're jealous."
I was about to defend myself, but then thought of something."Do you want me to be jealous?"
The look on Autumn's face said it all. She opened her mouth to speak, then closed it. She gave me a confused look, which turned into a look of surprise and fear."What do you mean?"
I stood up, looking slightly down at her."You want me to be jealous because you like me." A small smile formed on my face from satisfaction."You like me!"
"No I don't," Autumn exclaimed, turning her back to me.
I put my hands on her shoulders."Admit it," I said mimicking her. Then, I smiled again."You like me."
Autumn groaned and moved away from me."I hate you. You're the worse brother ever."
"Autumn." I was starting to get serious."Autumn look at me."
Autumn slowly turned around and faced me."What?" She answered harshly.
"Autumn, I want you to be honest with yourself and me." I stepped closer to her, hoping she would at least try to listen to me."Do you in any way like me?"
Autumn's rage subsided, changing into guilt and sorrow. She unfolded her arms and stared into my eyes, her mouth shaking. She opened it to speak, but was quickly interrupted.
"Kids, dinner's ready," Mother said as she stood in the doorway.
Autumn and I looked at her simultaneously, stepping away from each other. Mother left after giving us looks, venturing back downstairs. Autumn turned to leave, but I grabbed her arm to stop her. I needed an answer.
"Answer me before you go," I whispered, watching the look on her face.
Autumn stared at me for a long time, thinking. Then, she slightly nodded before looking away, blushing."Don't rub it in." Autumn turned and left my room, closing the door behind her.
I stayed standing just where I was, looking straight at the door. It felt as if I was standing there for hours. All that played in my brain was Autumn nodding her head, her cheeks turning red. A small smiled came across my face, and I turned and sat back on my bed. My smile widened the more I thought.
"She does like me."
