Sweet and Almost Silent

When I heard them say those words, I had practically fell dead right then and there. This wasn't real. I was just in a dream. Yeah, I was still under my pink and black fleece covers. All I needed to do was pinch myself hard and I'd wake up. I grabbed my shoulder and pinched. Nothing happened. I wanted to scream. THIS WASN'T FAIR! Why did my life have to end so early?! I hadn't had my first kiss yet. I hadn't dated yet. Hell, I hadn't done so many things in my short life! I looked at my X-rays in the room. Everything looked fine. But it wasn't. If you looked very closely, up in my left shoulder, there was a small, dark circle. The doctors couldn't figure out what it was. They did know that whatever it was, it was slowly shutting down my body, one cell at a time...

"Reed Hunter!" Mrs. Smith yelled. "Put your electronics away and listen!"

I sighed. Oh look! There's the last flying fuck I give!

I wanted to yell these words and other harsh ones at her, but I didn't want to get in any more trouble than I already was.

Slowly, I started to drift off into my own little world. I thought about how my pack was having an important meeting today to celebrate the marriage of my older brother and his mate of two years.

I have 3 older brothers(2 of them are twins) and 1 younger sister.

My oldest brother, Raven, is 22. He was the one getting married.

My second oldest brothers, Blaze and Flint, are both 19. and they found their mates who have been together for 3 years(might I add that their mates are twins as well).

My younger sister, Willow, is 15 and she found her mate just recently.

So basically I'm 18 and still haven't found my mate yet while the rest of my family has. You have no idea how embarrassing it is. And maybe a little lonely.

"Excuse me, Mrs. Smith, sorry to interrupt your class," said a raspy voice.

I looked across the room and saw a scrawny kid with a pink slip of paper.

"I have Miss Marabell Johnson. She just returned from a doctor's appointment." The poor kid stuttered almost every word.

As soon as Marabell stepped in the classroom, the scrawny kid ran as fast as he could. He wasn't looking where he was going though and slammed into a wall. I snickered silently.

Obviously he was a human, only humans reacted to Mrs. Smith that way. 98 percent of our school population were shapeshifters, Mrs. Smith included. Humans don't really know what we are, they just know something's different about us. To humans, our eyes have a certain intensity that only they can see.

"Let me see your pass, young lady." Mrs. Smith barked. Marabell quietly handed her the pass and sat down in the empty table seat next to me. She looked down in her book bag, searching for something. I noticed she had no books with her.

I sniffed the air. Human, definitely human. No shapeshifter would have forgotten anything, we have a good memory.

"Want to share?" I asked her, sliding my book towards her side of the table. I don't know why I offered my book to a human. I never really try to bother with humans. They are so below us, it's pointless for me to associate with them. But I did anyway.

She looked up and into my emerald green eyes. I noticed a stray tear in the corner of her chocolate brown ones. In fact her eyes were bloodshot. But I didn't really pay attention to that. As soon as her chocolate eyes met mine, I felt a powerful electricity in the air around me. I felt my eyes widen at the strange feeling and I noticed her eyes widened as well. She could could feel this, too.

I had found my mate.
