Leann
Toby's eyes turned to glass. He looked at me innocently as his eyes watered. He sucked in air getting ready to wail. I thought fast, there was no way I was gonna let Toby ruin my chances at this.
I took my necklace off and dangled it in front of him. He stops. His worry replaced with wonder as he grasped at the beads, color reflecting upon the blue irises. I relax with him in my arms. Toby was my peace, the calming part of me. Luckily, he settles down just in time for Luke's performance.
"Hello everyone, I'm Luke Vince and today I will be singing and playing a song I made a few years ago called 'cherry blossoms'" he smiled at me and began with his minor chord on his acoustic guitar.
"Oh my god, he is so cute," I heard someone say behind me.
I ignored it and watched as he started singing his song. I had already heard it a million times. He sang I to me for a birthday present...yes he wrote it for me. I had already memorized it by heart and could even sign in a harmony... of course he didn't need me for that. See, Luke is special. He has a secret talent he uses to make Judges go crazy.
The smell of your hair, the sweetness of your lips....
Here it comes...
Cherry blossoms
He harmonized with himself singing a chord lower. It was rare for this to happen, another signer, Lalah Hathaway was able to to it too. Its where your vocal chords vibrate at a certain angle where the vibration pitch matches the pitch of the tone your voice box admits. Confused? Sorry...its very hard to explain.
Once again I couldn't see the Judges faces...but the were amazed...I could tell.

Kya
I step back inside my house, closing the door behind myself. The toasty air is a relief to my strained and cold muscles. I hate this weather sometimes, when it's just barely not cold enough to snow, but pouring rain.
My brother is sitting there on the piano bench on some dumb phone game. I guess this is what sixteen year old single boys do for fun when their xbox is getting fixed by their adoptive dad.
"Hey Kya," Declan, the one of my adoptive brother's who's my genetic brother's age, says. The smell of banana bread wafts down the hall.
"Hey Declan. Have you seen Zac?"
"Zac's still asleep," my brother, Jude, says, switching to snapchatting some girl. He's had a crush on her since eighth grade. He's in eleventh now.
"Really?" I ask, shrugging. "Whatever. Not my fault he's being lazy."
"Where were you?" Jude asks as Declan's mom calls him over. "You just left early this morning with your guitar and violin. I had no idea where you were going. I called you five times."
"Jude, chill," I sigh, swinging my guitar case off of my shoulder and onto the stairs. "I was performing at the Paramount for an audition, remember?"
"No," he replies tersely. "Was there anyone else?"
"What do you think, Jude? It was an audition. You don't audition for something against yourself. Then it would be showing up for a job."
"Oh. Anyone I would know?"
"Probably. There was a girl named Latisha or something."
"Lakisha?" he asks. I shrug.
"Probably. I recognized her. She's like latino, tall, waist-length hair, wearing a mini skirt..."
"Oh, yeah. Nice legs, right?"
I roll my eyes. "Sure," I say, pushing past him up the stairs.
"Any cute girls?" he asks. I freeze. That one girl... Leann... her voice is so pure and soft, and she's so ridiculously talented. Her hair... that color just hits me in the heart. I don't know why. If only she could be mine, but I'll never see her again.
"Nope," I lie. "I have to go," I say.
"You just came back," he says, taking his eyes off of his phone, putting them onto me for a second, but not quickly enough to see me before I slam the door closed.
Exhaling loudly, I walk down the front yard steps briskly. I'm gonna go to Starbucks to get a croissant and a mocha for breakfast. I need some alone time. I'm so brain dead right now. I can't take my mind off of her, and I only know her name. That's not the only thing, either. There were so many people there with their families, smiling happily when they were congratulated. Their parents were smiling excitedly as their children sung. They seemed so happy and useful.
I haven't had that for so long. I haven't had anyone care about me like all of them before. Even Leann, she had that guy she was standing with and that baby...
Oh god. She's straight. I stop in my tracks. How could I be so stupid? She was standing with a boy. She hugged him. SHE WAS HOLDING A BABY. Oh god. What if that's her baby?? What if those were her boyfriend and their baby?
I grab my hair, feeling the horrible surge of guilt and sadness that comes upon me every single time I fall in love with someone. Right after they reject me or use me.
I step inside the Starbucks, stepping into line.
And then I see it. A flash of pink hair.
"Leann?" I call.
She looks up. Oh my god. It's actually her. My heart flutters as I remember her voice.
"Hey Kya," she says, blushing a bit. I see she's next to that boy, and she's holding that baby. "See you, Luke," she adds on before stepping away to order her stuff. Luke hesitates before checking his watch and relenting to walk outside, shoving past me.
We're alone. The line is basically gone. There are only three other people in the entire Starbucks.
This is my chance.
