We arrived in Liverpool on June 1st, exhausted. Hamburg really took a lot out of Paul. He was asleep for the majority of the next two days.

Then they rehearsed for two days for their meeting with George Martin, the man who had signed them to Parlaphone. Then they were off to London. It was going to be a short trip, only two days, so I stayed behind again.

They came back with a signed contract, but I could tell there was something wrong. When we were alone at my flat, Paul told me what it was.

"Well, George Martin seemed to like us, but he didn't like Pete. He wants to bring in a session drummer when we record in September."

"Does Pete know?" I asked. I felt sorry for Pete, but I knew what would happen to him was inevitable.

"Not yet, no. Brian pulled the rest of us aside and told us. Since he told us we've been talking and we think might need to get a new drummer. I mean we actually haven't been that happy with Pete for a while" he said running his hands through his hair, something he usually only did when he was upset or agitated.

"Well, who are you thinking about?" I asked him, while my mind was already answering with "Ringo"

"Well, I think it's going to be me. I'm giving up the bass and taking up the drums" he said, and his eyebrows went right up.

"You liar! You can't lie to me, I know your tell!" I said laughing at his expression

"My tell, what do you mean?"

"When you're lying your eyebrows go straight up. So you can't get anything past me, mister!" I said laughing again because he was bewildered.

"Really? Well, I'll have to work on that. Let's see, my name is John" he said and his eyebrows went straight up.

"Nope" I said now doubled up laughing at him. He tried a few more lies, all discerned by his eyebrows.

"Well, that's quite enough miss" he said after his last failure. "I know a way to keep you from laughing" He pulled me up and kissed me thoroughly. He was right, no more laughing from me.

We celebrated Paul's birthday at his dad's house. It was a quiet day, not much happened. It is a day, that when I look back, I can remember very clearly. I made dinner for all of them and a cake for Paul's birthday, which they enjoyed. I think they liked having someone to take care of them at times. I was quite happy to do so. For his present I got Paul a silver i.d. bracelet. It had his name on the front and on the back I had them engrave:

I Love You,

Anne

When he saw the engraving I told him "So you can have a little of me with you, even when you are gone"

"Ta, I love it. I won't take it off" he said kissing me.

It was the beginning of August and the boys were away at one of their shows out of town. There was a knock at my door, and when I opened it I found Cynthia. Not an unusual occurrence, as we were often together especially when the boys were gone. However, she was in tears.

"What's wrong, Cyn?" I asked, after I had invited her in.

"I think I'm pregnant." She said, crying a little harder.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, I've missed my time, and it's always been regular. I go to the doctor today to make sure, would you come with me?"
