The Beginning

My whole story begins on May 29th 1996 when I was just 5 years old. It started off as a normal morning but that quickly changed:

I had decided that I would take out all my dolls and play house like I did pretty much everyday after I came home from Kindergarten. My mom came home for me everyday so she could watch me and my dad normally came home a couple hours later. He was a accountant at a local company and he had been for a long time.

That day he came home about 2 hours earlier than normal, crying.

"What's wrong?" my mom was quick to ask "Did something bad happen?"

That was when what we call his 'mood' started.

"DID SOMETHING HAPPEN" he began to laugh "SHIT WHY DO YOU THINK I'M CRYING" his voice began to get louder and louder.

"Do you need something to drink" my mom politely asked, trying to calm him down.

"No just leave me the hell alone for a while" he answered.

That was when he came over to the room where I was playing to watch some TV. As he walked over he started to kick my dolls all over the place and he even picked one up, ripped its head off and even commented "That's how I feel right now."

That was when as an outspoken child I stood up for myself. "Daddy look I know your up.."

"JUST SHUT UP FOR ONCE. I LOST MY DAMN JOB TODAY AND NOW I HAVE NOTHING. NOTHING."

"I'm sorry daddy maybe you can get a new job soon"

"Do you really think its that easy to get a job" he said, starting to scare me

"Well if a job is like school its easy" I answered trying to make the situation a little brighter and better. My mom was still making my dad some coffee as she also wanted to make my dad feel better.

"You know what, just come here for a second"

I walked over thinking he needed a hug and some cheering up for the girl he called princess every day. That was when it happened, for the 7th or 8th time.

I went over with my arms open ready to hug when he hit me right across the cheek. "Now that'll teach you to shut up"

My mom was in the process of bringing the coffee over when he hit me so she dropped the glass all over the ground, causing a shatter.

"Sasha go upstairs will you" my mom requested as I was on the ground crying my eyes out.

I nodded and ran up the stairs. That's when the yelling started. Little did she know this wasn't the first time. I was just good at hiding it. Every time he got mad he would get his anger out on me. One time he hit me so hard in the nose that I had a bloody nose for an hour. I just told my mom I tripped and fell. No child wants their parents to break up because of them. Also what kid doesn't want a full and happy family.

"IS THIS EVEN THE FIRST TIME?" I could hear my mom yelling louder than I've ever heard before.

"This doesn't concern you" he answered.

"THIS DOESN'T CONCERN ME? SHE'S OUR DAUGHTER AND MY EVERYTHING, "

"But look I feel better now"

"Your are one sick man" my mom answered starting to cry. With that she ran upstairs to come talk to me.

"How many times has this happened" she asked me.

"7 or 8 but really its fine" I tried to make things seem ok

"You may think it's fine but it really isn't. People who love you shouldn't be hurting you"

"What's gonna happen now?" I innocently asked.

"We have to go. People like this never change" she answered.

"But you love daddy!"

"When I saw him hit you that changed everything. I'll never unsee that" she honestly told me.

"This is what I was afraid of though" I said scared of what would happen next.

"I know sweetie but things need to change, the abusing will just get worse trust me on that. I knew that he grew up in a tough neighborhood but I always thought that he was different and that he was better than the people that he group up around."

With that we hugged each other and cried until my dad came up to my room to confront us.

"Look Sasha I'm sorry for hurting you" he said with his face completely blank.

"Just leave" my mom bluntly stated

"Look this is my family too." he defended himself.

"Not anymore. Tomorrow Sasha and I are leaving. Divorce files will be sent over. If you try finding us I will report you to the police, and clearly that will not work in your favor. Just go find some other family to ruin" she said emotionless.

"Look we can work through this"

"No you know when I was younger my mom used to be abused by my dad. Abuse is close to me and you knew that. I know how it can ruin someone. This is the worst possible thing that you could have done." she explained.

Although I had never known my grandma used to be abused, I started to understand why my mom was taking this so seriously.

"Just sleep on it ok" he said trying to sound like a nicer person.

Around 5 am that morning my mom came to my room, woke me up, and by 6am we were packed and ready to leave.

"Sorry you couldn't say goodbye. I just didn't want him to stop us"

"Its okay mommy, we will be ok" I again tried to lift the mood up.

"Just so you know we might not have a permanent home for a little while. I am only a cashier so that will be enough for food" she warned me.

"Mom we can do it together!" I exclaimed not realizing what living out of a car really meant.

That one moment when my mom saw the abuse, changed my whole life. I lived out of a car for 10 years while I attended the local schools. My mom was able to finally buy a crappy apartment when I was 17. The years I lived in my moms car made me stronger. Some times we wouldn't eat for a whole day. Sometimes we would get food out of dumpsters. That was just how my childhood was. I knew one day though I would have the chance to change my fate. I knew one day I would be able to help myself and my mom. That was my motivation as I went through all the grades. That was my reason to keep going and keep trying no matter what.

All if this because the man who used to call me princess every mornings costly mistake.
