Chapter 6

After that day, hours turned into days. Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into summer break; and at the end of summer break comes school. School was due to start in only a week and Aiden had only come over a few times since the whole pool incident. The good news was that the stalls were done now. Bad news was that Aiden had no reason to come over anymore, even though he had come over once since then but he had only played Xbox with Drew.

And me? Well I felt the need for a personal change.

I came downstairs for breakfast and walked into the kitchen before announcing "I want to cut my hair short!"

Drew kept playing the Xbox, Dad kept reading his newspaper and Mom kept typing away at her email. I was completely ignored. Fine then.

I grabbed a bowl of cereal and quickly chowed it down before running back upstairs to shower and get dressed. After drying my hair- which today was a frizzy mess for some reason- I dialed Caleb's number.

“Hello?” he answered groggily. He must have still been sleeping. I glanced at the clock. It was already past 11 in the morning. It was about time he woke up!

“Hey Caleb! It’s Adela.” I said cheerfully into the phone.

“Hey girl! What’s up? Watcha doing? You wanna go bikini shopping?” Caleb teased evilly. Ever since I agreed to let him take me shopping, he had been teasing me non stop.

“Actually I was hoping you could give me a ride to your mom’s salon please?”

“Err...why?”

“Because I want a haircut.”

There was a moment of silence before Caleb spoke again. “That’s awesome! I never saw you as one to do drastic stuff just before school started. I’ll come by to get you in about an hour. I need to grab a shower and stuff.”

“Alright! See you then!” I said, almost bouncing with excitement.

After I hung up I realized I had an hour of free time on my hands. I decided to go out and and spend some time with the horses. I had been trying to spend as much time as I could with them but the weather had not been cooperating. Either it would be storming or it would be so hot I was afraid I was going to melt if I spent any more time outside than necessary for filling up water buckets.

I skipped outside and found the horses milling in the shade. I grabbed my grooming kit and went out to give them a quick cleaning. Luckily it wasn’t very hot outside.

It seemed only minutes later when Caleb pulled up in his new black Ford Fusion. I kissed Ballerina and Bud on the nose quickly before skipping over to Caleb’s car. His professional image-oriented father had made him sell his Volteswagon Bug and bought him a ‘real’ car. Caleb was not happy about it in the least.

As I climbed into the front seat I felt different. Caleb didn’t have music blasting like he usually did, he didn’t have bits and pieces, sticky notes, post cards, concert tickets, hairbrushes and other things littered on the dashboard and on the floor. Instead it was impeccably clean. I glanced in the back seat and saw 4 or 5 cardboard boxes piled on the seat with “Caleb, University.” written on them in Sharpie.

I had forgotten Caleb was leaving for college soon.

“Hey girl!” Caleb said cheerfully, but I could see the dark circles under his eyes.  He must have spent all night packing. Boy did I feel like a terrible friend.

“Hey. I brought some money with me. Do you want to go buy some Starbucks or something?” I suggested gently.

“Why?” he asked while yawning.
