4 Years and 7 months ago.
"Melody, come here for a moment." I waved her over. She smiled and bounced my way. We were finally graduating high school together and we were about to go celebrate at the Woods Grill when I decided to bring my best friend over to talk to my other close friend.
"Ray, what is it? I didn't think you would keep the party from happening." She said in her soft voice as she neared me.
"Mel, I want you to meet Patrick Huntingsworth. Patrick, this is my best friend Melody Carmichael. We were going to hit the grill, wanna join us?" I introduced the two and Mel's eyes lit up, Patrick smiled and looked Mel over from head to toe. Melody had platinum blond hair which was pulled halfway back with a sapphire blue hair comb, beautiful blue eyes and a sweet, sexy smile. She was five foot four in height but her sapphire blue heels gave her an extra three inches, she was wearing a knee length black dress so her accessories blended in nice.
"Sure. I wouldn't mind a burger." Patrick replied.
"Good. Then let's go." Mel said as she grabbed my arm and tugged us in the direction of her car.
"We'll meet you there, I guess." I shouted over as Mel continued to pull me in the direction of her car. I finally stopped resisting and walked with her. When we got to the car, and both got in, Mel laughed.
"Where have you been keeping that hunk all this time?" She asked me as she gasped for breath and fumbled with her keys.
"Locked in the gym apparently." I replied amused as I straightened my paisley dress. Mel had thought it was hideous up until I paired the rose colored dress with my brown, short, cowgirl boots.
"It looks like it." She turned on the car and began to drive. The music played softly in the background and neither of us spoke for a while. We were coming to a stop at a redlight when she turned up the song a little more. The light turned green and Mel began driving, as she crossed the intersection a black Cadillac car ran the red on their side and crashed straight into us on the drivers side. Next thing I know is our airbags deployed and there was blood. Lots of it. I shouted Melodys name but she didn't respond, her face was covered in glistening glass and blood from the windshield. My seatbelt had stuck and I couldn't reach my phone in the cup holder. After a few moments, I began to feel numbness spreading through my legs and I cried out Melodys name once more out of panic but after that my vision went black. When I woke up, I was in the hospital. The lights were too bright and the machines noises were too loud. I tried to adjust my eyes and look around.
"She's waking up, get Doctor Hayes in here now." A mans voice said and soft footsteps shuffled out.
"Ray?" The voice asked and I cringed.
"Ray? I'm Nurse Austin. Can you open your eyes and look at me for a minute?" He prompted. I obeyed and shifted my eyes into focus on him. My vision blurred at first but began to clear up a little. In front of me was a man, well built and tall with hospital green scrubs on and a notepad in his hand.
"Good. Now, do you know where you are?" Austin asked. Jotting down something in a notepad. A strand of dark hair falling over his forehead.
"In a hospital." I replied with a hoarse voice.
"Yes, do you know which?" He asked and scribbled something else down.
"No." I said simply. He looked up at me then, his green eyes meeting mine and he smiled.
"That's okay. You're in Flowers Hospital, for the time being in the ICU. Your doctor will be here soon. I'm just here to do the basics." He said then looked down again before glancing at me. "Can you tell me your full name and date of birth?"
"I'm Rayiella Casey Davidson. I was born on June sixth of nineteen ninety-six." I said and blinked as my vision began to blur again.
"Good. Do you remember what happened to you?" Nurse Austin asked cautiously.
"I was driving with my friend, Melody, to a restaurant and we got hit by a car." I said as calmly as I could.
"Yes you were. You were hit rather badly." He looked at me with sympathy and wrote something down.
"Where's Melody?" I asked him and watched his face for a moment to get a hint as to what happened to my friend.
"She's in surgery right now, Ray. It'll be a while before we know anything. " he looked hopeful at me. Just as he began writing an older man in a white lab coat and navy scrubs waltzed into my room.
"I'm Doctor Hayes. How are you feeling, Miss Davidson?" Doctor Hayes looked at me and took the chart out of the bottom of the bed and glanced at the monitors of the machines before looking at me.
"I can't feel my legs, my head is killing me and the light is too bright and the machines are loud: outside of that, I'm feeling crappy." I replied with a little sarcasm. The grey haired Doctor looked at me with concern before glancing at the chart in his hand again. He grabbed the silver pen out of his lab coat, pulled the end of my sheet up at my feet.
"Close your eyes for a moment please." He instructed and I obeyed. Some shuffling happened before he clicked the pen on and it was silent.
"Miss Davidson, can you feel anything?" The doctor asked, concern clearly in his voice.
"Should I be feeling something?" I replied, my eyes still shut.
"You may open your eyes now." The Doctor said and looked over at my nurse. "Get her into the neurovascular CT scan now, do a imagery on her spinal cord and brain waves then bring her back here, and get me the X-rays as fast as possible." He said to Austin and then looked at me. "Miss Ray, nurse Austin here will be taking you to get some images done to rule out some things and will take good care of you. Meanwhile let me up this dose of morphine." Doctor Hayes said as he tapped on the morphine drip.
"Okay" was all I managed to get out before I was dragged under.
