Sunlight poured in from the window and bathed the room in an orange glow. She left her room with footsteps which were barely audible. The house reeked of cigars and stale alcohol; her father had just left for work. There was an empty bottle of whiskey lying on top of the kitchen counter, next to an ash tray which was full to the brim. She scrunched her nose; she loathed the smell of it as it was proof of her father's existence.
She took out a bowl from the ash wood cupboard and prepared herself a bowl of cereal. She ate, lost in her thoughts, looking around the vast room and how empty if felt without her mother.
The velvet curtains, the mahogany table, the archaic china; her mother still lived inside them, inside everything she saw.
The clock struck eight and she decided that she better get to school. She stepped out of her house and a chill went down her spine. The sky was grey, casting its groom upon the world.
She tasted the bitterness of the weather on the tip of her tongue. Since her mother's passing, everyday felt like that.
Soon, the red brick building came into view and she saw teenage boys smoking their cigarettes and hooting at every girl that passed by.
"Oi, Ivy!" one of them called, taking a drag and tossing his cigarette towards her.
She gritted her teeth and walked past him, trying her best to ignore him. But he started to follow her, making it harder for Ivy not to bash his head in.
Ivy looked over at the boy sitting on the pavement with a girl with long, wavy blonde locks. They seemed so happy together, laughing at the silliest things; that girl had replaced her. She remembered when she would sit with him and laugh with him, of course they never shared a romantic relationship, and they were siblings. Like twins, as he would put it.
Their eyes met for a split second, sharing the feelings they had bottled up ever since he had abandoned her.
He gave her a light smile, and she politely returned the gesture. He, then, looked away and gently kissed the girl's lips who seemed to be smirking into it. Ivy sighed; the boy would never talk to her again. He had her; she was beautiful, popular and rich. Why would he need someone like herself? She had the perfect body and what she was wearing; a pair of shorts with a lacy tube top with a cardigan draped around her hips. She looked at her own clothes; a faded "Pink Floyd" t-shirt with a black jacket and a pair of worn out jeans.
She looked around for the boy who had followed her inside and found him with two other girls, smoking another cigarette. She then dropped her school bag and sat down on a near-by bench, taking out a book, shielding her face with it.
She looked up only to find her twin standing in front of her, awkwardly kicking at a stone.
"Ivy."
"Charlie."
"How've you been?" he asked, clearing his throat.
"Fine, how've you been?" she replied, not looking away from her feet.
Charlie sat down next to her, and smirked. Ivy knew why he was smirking, and it was hard not to let out a laugh because in her eyes he was never hot, he was a brotherly figure.
"I'm still right, you know," he spoke, after a while.
"I'll always have the power to make you laugh."
"Sadly, you'll always have that power," she said with a sigh, "even though everything is changing, that never will."
"What do you mean everything is changing?" Charlie raised an eyebrow.
"Well-"
"Charlie! Babe, come on, we have class soon, I really don't want detention on Friday especially because this one will be special!" the blonde girl whined, waving her arms about.
