Chapter 1

"No!" Oaktail clawed the rock with frustration, "You're doing it wrong!"

Flamepaw looked at him, "What?"

"If you do that," he pointed to Flampaw's paws, "The prey will hear you!"

"What's wrong with that?" Flamepaw asked looking at her paws, "They look fine to me."

Oaktail shook his head and sighed, "When you drop into a hunter's crouch, your supposed to do it lightly and quick. If you stick your paws out like that, it will be loud and slow."

"They still look fine to me." Flamepaw tilted her head.

"That's not the point!" Oaktail shoved Flamepaw gently, "All the other apperentices already made their first catch! Come on, want to try it your way on real prey?"

"Yeah!" Flampepaw sqeaked like a little kit, "My way!" she bounded away.

Flamepaw disapeared into the woods, then came back, her body covered with mud.

Oaktail smiled, "Are you going to listen to me now?"

"You? Of course not!" Flamepaw said playfully.

Oaktail sighed, "Let's practice some battle moves. Try to knock me down."

"But, wouldn't that hurt?" Flamepaw shifted her paws.

"Just do it!" Oaktail said desperatly.

Flamepaw crept toward Oaktail, then sprang foward.

"Missed again." Oaktail growled. "The secret is to not to spring foward. If it was a real fight, the warrior will see you and it will avoid you. You can spring foward when you're behind the cat. Spring at the waek spot of the cat." Oaktail lightly touched Flamepaw's spine with his tail. ''Okay, now try."

Flamepaw crept behind Oaktail and sprang at "the spot" and started batting it with her paws.

"Ow! Stop hitting my butt!" Oaktail cried.

"Oops." Flamepaw avoided his eyes.

Suddenly Adderfang pelted to Oaktail, "You're on hunting patrol, you can take Flamepaw with you ."

Oaktail looked at Flamepaw, "Flamepaw, go change the elder's bedding, when you're done you can do anything."

Flamepaw bounded away toward the medicine cat's den to get moss, "Hi Leopardblaze! Can I have some fresh moss?"

Leopardblaze touched her with her tail, "Sure! Ask Dawnpaw for it. Right now, I'm busy. Oh, Dawnpaw is in the nursery."

Flamepaw poked her head in the nursery and saw her playing with the kits, "Dawnpaw? Can I have some fresh moss?"

"Sure! Ask Leopardblaze for it. Right now, I'm busy. Oh, Leopardblze is in the medicine cat den."

"But-" Flamepaw began to protest.

"No buts!" Dawnpaw didn't look up from the kits.

Flamepaw padded away, "Leopardblaze? Can I have some fresh moss?"

Leopardblaze shook her head, "Didn't I tell you to ask Dawnpaw?"

"I saw her playing with the kits, so I thought that she would tell me. But she said to ask you!" Flamepaw explained.

"Okay!" Leopardblaze threw down a pawful of herbs. "Follow me. If Dawnpaw is too lazy, then I will do it myself!'"
