Sans, as always, was sat at his usual stool in Grillby's. He had been flirting with the bartender all morning, which wasn't an uncommon thing. Sans liked telling jokes and using shitty pickup lines, and Grillby was the only person who could put up with it. If we were being honest, the fire monster actually enjoyed listening to Sans tell bad puns.

Grillby had always had a crush on the skeleton, but he knew no matter how much Sans flirted with him, he never actually meant any of it. He was just doing it for laughs.

Later that day, Grillby just happened to overhear a conversation between Sans and one of the other regulars.

"Hey Sans, I heard that a rumor was going around saying that you and Grillby were a thing. Is that true?"

The fire monster's heart rate increased. He listened in, his full attention on what Sans was going to say next.

"Hehe, of course not! We're just friends. Even if I was interested in guys, he's just not my type. It would never happen."

So that's how he felt. Every word that came out of Sans' mouth felt like a punch in the gut. Even though he knew that it was never possible, Grillby was still hurt. He stumbled back, not sure how to react. The glass that he had been holding fell to the floor, shattering on impact.

"Hey, Grillbz, you okay?" Sans asked the bartender, looking concerned.

"Y-yeah, I just... it must have slipped, I'm such an idiot. I-I'm sorry." He stuttered out, not able to meet the eyes of the shorter monster.

"Here, let me help you." Sans went to reach for a piece of glass, just as Grillby did the same. Their hands met, and a light blue tinge spread across the skeleton's face. The flames on the bartender's head glowed brighter than usual, and he immediately pulled away.

"I can get this Sans, you don't have to help." Grillby said, his voice cracking. Sans seemed to catch on to what happened, because he blushed an even brighter blue.

"You heard what I said out there, huh?" He said, smiling shyly.

"Does it matter?" Grillby said, standing.

"It matters because I DO like you, Grillbz. I was just afraid that you didn't like me back. What do you think all the flirting was for?"

Oh.

"Hey, why don't we head to my place? We could watch a movie or something if you want." It seemed like Sans' entire face was blue. The color just kept spreading.

"I can't, I have customers." Grillby responded sadly.

"Close the place up. You deserve a break, anyway." It didn't take much convincing to make the bartender say yes.

About ten minutes later, the place was empty and the door was locked. The two of them set off on their first 'date'. They didn't even realize that they were holding hands.
