My heart beat wildly inside my chest. Time was running out. If I was going to follow my plan through to the end, I had to do it now. I had to do it before he found me. Or I lost my nerve. I ran with all the strength and speed I could muster. My body burned with the fire of adrenaline even as my mind screamed with fear. I pushed all thoughts of him aside as I ran. He would forgive me for what I was about to do. He had to. Pausing for a brief moment, I rested my hand on the rough bark of the lone tree rising from the bleak landscape and peered over the edge of the cliff cautiously, judging the distance to the rocky shore below. Hungry waves wrapped themselves around the sharp crags scattered along the shore. No one would be able to survive the fall from this height. Backing away from the edge, I ignored the freight train charging through my chest and allowed myself one last moment of hope. I imagined his face and the fierce way his love emanated from his eyes. I could feel his arms holding me tight, the press of his hand on my back as he drew me into the depth of his embrace. With his name formed on my lips, I flung myself from the cliff, straight into the waiting arms of death.
