"Come on! For once in your life do something about the way you feel!"
" Come on Becca, get real! What could I do that would make him like me?"
I was arguing with my best friend Rebecca for the fifth time this week. She's homeschooled so she doesn't realize the major social problem of me liking Dustin.
" Look, I have to go." I said, rolling my eyes cause I knew she couldn't see it through the phone.
" Can we meet tomorrow after school."
"I have work but you can meet me there for break."
"Ok sounds great. See you tomorrow."
" Byeee."
I hung up the phone, threw it on my table, and flopped onto my bed with a sigh. Becca would be so popular if she went to school. Why can't I just be that naturally cool? I decided that 10:34 was late enough and climbed into my bed. As I fell asleep I tried not to think about my social status compared to Becca's.
The next morning I got up, showered, and put on a normal outfit for me. Jeans and my old orthodontist's tee shirt. I grabbed breakfast on the go and went to school. I got there and immediately went to my best-friend-at-school,Maddie's locker. She also happens to know about my little crush. She's about as optimistic as I am. As soon as I walk up to her, Dustin walks in with all his hotness in check. It seemed like every girl turned and looked in his direction. He didn't pay a single one of them any attention, except one. While walking down the hallway, Dustin turned his head in my direction. He met my gaze and smirked. I didn't even register what happened in time to do anything. I stood there and stared at him, like an idiot.
"Well, maybe I was wrong to doubt you two."
Maddie said as she slammed her locker and walked off. I stood there with my mouth hanging open, until the late bell shook me out of my trance. I went through the rest of the day without taking in a word I read. As soon as the end of school bell rang, I was out the door and off to the local Starbucks. That's where Becca works.
As soon as I got there I told her my little story.
" I'm ready to do something about the way I feel."
I said with a sigh.
"But I'm gonna need some help."
Becca squealed, told her boss she had to go but would make up the hours later, and hung up her apron. She grabbed my arm and dragged me to her car.
" Where are we going?"
I asked rolling my eyes at Becca's reaction.
"Shopping!"
Becca squealed again and drove to the closest thing this town had to a mall. Picture one of those movie shopping montages, where I try on clothes that I like and Becca doesn't. Then I try on clothes that Becca likes and I don't. But we end up walking out with bags upon bags of clothes anyway. That's pretty much what happened. We also decided to have a sleep over so that Becca could show me 'the right way' to wear my clothes. Her words not mine. For once in my life I was going to do something for myself.
