On a cool summer day in June, I was outside teaching my fourth grade class how to shoot on a lacrosse goal. The team's goalie wasn't very good, so the other girls were really excited when they made a shot. In fact, I told the shyest girl that if she could score then I would bring ice cream to next practice. As the little girl named Amy took her shot, the team held its breath and waited until the ball rolled past the keeper's feet and into the net. The whole group of girls ran in to give her hug, I was caught in the excitement and soon found myself jumping in a circle with my young lacrosse stars."You always did know how to find happiness in the little things" said a masculine voice behind me
I slowly turned around, my mind was flipping... Could it be the same voice? As the speaker came into view, I gasped. My eyes landed on a face that had matured from the one that I knew so well. My eyes travel the length of Dylan's body, his toned legs, wide stance, slim stomach, chiseled cheekbones and his smug grin. My gaze stopped on his piercing blue eyes, for what seemed like eternity we stood there drinking each other in.
I felt a tug on the hem of my shorts as Amy tore my attention away from my past love. "Who's the guy staring at you, and why is he here?" I quickly told Amy that practice was over and bustled the girls to their waiting mothers, as I packed up my stuff, Dylan walked over to me. I didn't know what to say, how would you start a conversation with a guy that you haven't seen in years. Who just happened to show up at your work place looking as hot as ever in his khaki shorts...I decided to let him speak first.
"I was looking through the US lacrosse magazine, you know the on that hasn't been released but I got because I'm featured on the cover..... He said with a cocky smirk on his lips "And I noticed that I was listed as the number one men's player, I also couldn't help but notice that Grace Jones was listed as the rising star of the women's lacrosse league. And I thought to myself, huh, I knew a Grace Jones... Could it be the same one?"
I'm actually surprised by this information because I was beginning to wonder if the reporters had even noticed the fact that I was the first Syracuse captain that was a defender. Usually captains are the star attacker with the most goals and games won. As I bend over to pick up my bag, speechless from the news, Dylan reached for the bag also. I shove him off and heave my bag over my shoulder fixing him with a hard glare.
With a start I realize how mean I'm being and twirl around to face Dylan Lane, and offer my best smile.
"You're number one huh? I don't even know what team you play for... how could I have not heard about you?" I ask incredulously
"Oh sweet heart, don't act like you haven't heard of Princeton's star forward"
"Actually I heard something about some guy that rose up out of his past and started on the road to fame, then began breaking girl's hearts and immediately started declining in his performance. But what I hadn't heard from the press is that he turns out to be my child hood best friend..."
Suddenly he stopped me and pulled me into a firm hug...
"Damn, I missed your sarcasm and sass"
Despite myself I sunk into the hug and let him hold me.
