As she directly across from me at my table of 2, I was just nervous and I didn't know what to do. Do I know her? No...
"So what's up?" She asked with such causality.
"Uhm..do I know you..?" I managed to choke out.
"Yep." She replied
"Uh..how?" I was still a little frightened by her and her big confidence.
"Well, that's the part I don't really know.. You look really familiar. But not that kind of 'oh I think I've met them before but just don't remember their name or anything' kind of familiar. You look REALLY familiar. I know that I met you before."
Now that she mentions it, she did look a tiny bit familiar. But I don't really know. Well, Mom did tell me to try to make friends on my first day. Lets give this a try.
"Erm..so what's your name?" I awkwardly asked, breaking the silence and changing the subject.
"Oh yea. I'm Ali. Ali Brooks." She smiled at me and confidently held out her hand. You could tell that making new friends wouldn't be a problem for her.
"I'm Cameron Walker" I replied as I shook her hand.
She smiled at me and I returned the favor. She really did seem friendly, I was surprised she wanted to have lunch with 'that new weird kid'.
"So I don't mean to be rude, but don't you have a bunch of friends or something? Like that you normally eat lunch with..?"
"No, sometimes I eat lunch with my dad. He's the history teacher. Either that or I just head to the library to study or to the band room to hang out with one of my favorite teachers, Ms. Alkins. She isn't very popular among the other teachers, this is her first year teaching here, so sometimes I eat with her when she's alone in the lunch period. She's really nice. But anyways, don't worry, I'm not like some total nerd or anything, I just happen to not be very popular." She explained to me.
"Oh." I replied, feeling rude for basically saying she has no friends and to make it look like I was telling her to go away. "Today is my first day here, I just moved in last week. My dad disappeared when I was 7, so it's just me and my mom living here now."
"Oh, that sucks. Sorry." It looked like she was about to say more, but the final lunch bell rang and cut her off. Wow. Time flies.
"Well, I've got to get to algebra. I'll see you later?" Ali asks.
"Sure, see ya." I say as we head in different directions. Well, I guess I just made a new friend.
