"Hey I am heading home, see you two tomorrow." Trott said, quickly gathering his stuff and walking out of the office back home. Ross rubbed his hand over his face, taking a deep breath. Ross wishes he could go home too. He had been up since early this morning; nightmares leaving him in cold sweats and mindless staring at the ceiling in a desperate attempt to bore himself to sleep. But it didn't work. Now Ross had to finish editing a block of recording, and he was slower than usual because of the effects of last night.
"You okay mate?" Alex asked, leaning against the blue room separator. "You look tired." Ross wanted to snap back a sarcastic response to Alex, but he couldn't bring himself to it.
"I am. Had nightmares and couldn't sleep." Ross rested his head in his hands, closing his eyes for a moment. He felt Alex touch his shoulder, patting it with an understanding. Ross felt his cheeks light up red at the touch. Ross didn't like to admit it, but he has had a crush on Smith for quite some time. He felt like they had a bond, as silly as having a real connection, a bond seemed.
"I had a nightmare too last night. I managed to get back to sleep though..." Alex mumbled, taking a seat in Chris' chair. He rolled over to Ross' side, brushing their shoulders together as he looked at what Ross was editing. "I think if you just take 20 minute blocks out of the recording, that would work. Trials doesn't have a lot of editing usually."
"Yeah." Ross answered, sighing again. His eyelids felt so heavy.
"Well-" Alex put Chris' chair back, walking to his chair and grabbing his coat from around the back of it. "-I am off. Don't stay too late okay?" Ross just mumbled back. "Bye Ross."
"Bye Alex." And with that, Alex walked out of the office, down the hall. Ross could hear the elevators doors open and close before... Silence. Ross stared at the screen, hating the fact it was here. Ross quickly cut the recording into equal times and he had had enough, turning off his computer. He grabbed his belongings and walked out, locking the door behind him. As he got in the elevator and it started moving, he lost his balance falling against the wall with his shoulder. Ross mumbled a few choice words at the wall, before stepping off, rubbing his sore shoulder. He slid on his jacket and lifted the hood around his head, slumping home to where his warm bed resides.***
Something was wrong. Ross sat up in bed, looking over at his phone. It was 4:37 in the morning, what was he doing up? What was wrong? Ross sighed and got up, grabbing a shirt from the floor and sliding it on. He walked out of his room to the kitchen and grabbed himself a cold glass of water, taking a small sip. Ross stared at his oven clock as his eyes refocused on the flashing green time deep in concentration. Had Alex texted him that he was home safe? Ross put down his glass and rushed to his room, sliding around his door frame to his bed side table. He unlocked his phone and scrolled through his messages to Alex. No text. Ross licked his lips in worry and sat on his bed. It was cold now. Maybe Alex just forgot to text and passed out. He hadn't gotten a good nights sleep the night before either. Ross sighed and fell back into his bed, rubbing his face. He hoped that was the case at least.
***
"Morning Ross. Have you seen Alex?" Chris said as Ross walked into the office, tossing down his stuff.
"No I haven't. Did he text you last night?" Chris shook his head, looking a little worried. "Hmm." Ross mumbled before pulling out his phone and typing in Alex's number. He put the phone to his ear and paced around the small space waiting for a reply. But it went to voicemail.
"This is Alex Smith, leave whatever you have to say after the beep. But if it is Ross or Chris, hellooooo!" Ross chuckled a little. Alex was never an adult, he just stayed a child. The phone beeped and Ross left a quick message telling him to call if he got the message.
"No answer?" Chris asked, staring at his computer screen.
"No. And we can't record without him." Ross sighed, taking a seat. He turned on his screen to see the trials he had been editing the night before. Ross scrolled through and quickly edited out all the boring parts, or parts where they took years to finish a map. When he finished it was about an hour later, and still no Alex. Ross was really worried now. He compulsively licked his lips, checking his phone. Nothing from Alex. "Hey, I am going to Alex's to see if he is okay." Ross told Chris, standing up and walking out before Trott could say anything. He got outside and started running to Smith's. Oh god please be okay.
