It's my first official day as a "runner" I need to report into the exploration office today at 0600. The office isn't terribly far away, in terms of the compound that is built so far, I think of it like a giant "L" like shape. The compound is made of large "L" sections and levels lapping over each other. The office is on the same level as my house. Due to my sisters boyfriend's standing, our house is on the residential side of the governing section in the compound. They have a very important responsibility, constantly going on supply runs to provide the compound with as much food, cloths, materials as possible that we can carry. Since most electricity is out of commission due to the chaos of the world, runners have another important job and responsibility. Relaying messages, most of the time traveling with a bike, a backpack full of supplies in case of emergencies, and a radio is preferred. It is faster than running, and quieter than a car. Due to higher populated areas having more diseased corpses running around, driving on the back roads can be pretty safe. Without runners people wouldn't get to extremely valuable building supplies, or limited food supplies like soda, beer, candy, and toiletries. But in terms of contributing to the township as a whole, being able to find other people and communicate with them is vital to our way of survival. It can lead to finding potential survivors that wish to join our cause, to live a life of freedom. Now that governments all over the world have begun to collapse we need to form new ones ourselves. If a runner can find someone and figure out their particular skills, we can put them in a place they can succeed. I'm going to help in that cause of struggling for survival. "Philly! You're going to be late to your first supply run lesson, Come on let's go!" My best friend Ricky said, snapping me out of my trance of thought. His is real name is Rick, most just call him Ricky. He is pretty stocky for his height. He is only 5' 10" dirty blonde wavy hair, with dark roots and black studded earrings. He is pretty tan for being German, and probably weighs around 180 lbs.

"Ok! I'm coming!" I yelled back, I got lucky because my dad was a runner otherwise my house would be a lot worse then it already is. My house isn't much of a house more like a first floor house with three families, one in the basement, mine is what's left of the upstairs, and one for the first floor. But we all share the kitchen. Most of the compound is something you might read about in the Great Depression, at the library. We have like twenty houses with two to three families per house. But most live in tents or hammocks between two poles, acting like trees. But the infection hasn't been out for more than a I want to say a year or two. So finding loot isn't hard for now. But the compound is more like a city we have police, aka guards, doctors, builders of some kind and many more.

"Philly? Hello are you there?" Ricky said snapping his fingers in front of my face. I nod, "Sorry dude just zoned out." I answered groggily, "Also I'm just tired."

"Well stop that man or you'll miss the lesson." He whispered back. Oh my god crap we are already here? I thought.

"... That's how you activate the distress signal. Any questions recruits?" A strong gentle voice asked. No way it can't be... why or how.. I thought. The person in the front of the class, dressed in an instructor uniform was Amber . "Hi philly glad you could make it." She waved, and everyone in the line turned and looked at me. Like I knew the secret to stop the apocalypse. I just looked at the ground until everyone looked away. At Amber as she started announcing the process of getting their assigned number. "Those numbers are the number that you'll be called as in future supply runs." Said Amber, "Is that clear?!" she demanded.

"Yes mam!" The class yelled back. We all got our numbers and mine was thirteen, and Rickey's number is seventeen. The reason why this matters is because of our squad number assignment, 1-10 are a squad and go up by tens so Ricky and I are in the same squad. So we stand and wait for our squad leader who is supposed to take us on our first supply run. By the time our instructor showed up we were all just sitting in any shade we possibly could. It's only like 95 degrees out no big deal, unless your standing in it I thought. Then I saw a pair of military grade boots, through the tent I was sitting in to get out of the extreme heat, waiting there.

"Everyone in Squad Two get form up!" A loud booming voice yelled. Once we all realized he was talking to us did we get up out of our hiding spots, and form up. He started doing role call and we all started to introduce ourselves. Apparently he like yelling because every first letter he said was louder then the rest. God some people just want to be loud for the sake of yelling? I dont know but he is definitely one of them.

His name is Derik and is now my new commanding officer. Whatever the heck that means, he's ok I guess...Bang!!... The loud sound made me flinch. What the hell was that? I thought. That sound from the way I heard it was the...south gate... I was looking at the south gate, or what's left of it. Then the world goes dark.

I... I can't I just can't believe it. Someone just attacked my home and I watched it happen right in front of me. Who would anything like this? No not who, but why I thought. The town or more like a settlement I live in is called sobreviviente. In Spanish sobreviviente means survivor or leftovers. So I guess we are the leftovers in the world after the blast. Until now we have been peaceful and welcoming little town but someone just exploded our gate but why. Why did they do this? I thought then it hits me we need to patch the hole before they get here.

"Philly!! Are you there? Come on man wake up." Said a luminous voice. I feel a drop of water hit my face. The drop rolled down my face till it hit my lips. I realized someone was crying on me. Because when I tasted the water, but it was salty. Then I had a flashback to the explosion and the gate, the attack... I opened my eyes and looked around. The second my eyes opened someone hugged me whispering, "Thank god."

"What..?" I mumbled "The attack I...I was supposedly be guarding the Gate! Who are you where am I?"

My eyes were still blurry from the blast, am I blind? What happened? Who is kneeling before me? A second goes bye and suddenly I recognize who it was.. "Mandy? Mandy is that you?"

"You're awake!" She said happily, but as my face starts to wonder she sighs,"Jeez Philly I thought you'd be happy to see me."

"Where am I?" I asked.

"In the barracks I had you carried over here for your safety after the blast, but I need you to listen to me." With that my eyes focused and I realized, I could be in danger.. very shortly. Even though I had no idea what was going on, between the blast, and how I got here. I was determined by something inside me, the voice of my mother saying 'You, You need to live.'

I started to remember what happened and how I got here

I started to remember what happened and how I got here. Uhhhhg this hurts as my head throbs. I close my eyes and try to remember just before the world around me disappeared. As I look out over the barracks walls I see a graceful sunset, for just a brief moment. Before I hear someone yelling my name, "Philly look out!" I hear, and as I turn around just in the corner of my eye I can see something, someone, coming towards me. I turn around the the sounds behind me, to only be treated by an infected who managed to climb the walls of the estate through the hole in the wall.  Climbing out of the rubble grumbling and moaning, it runs towards me. I try to duck underneath the lost soul as it runs at me, since I am only armed with a pocket knife at the moment. I doubt I would be able to go any real damage to their beast without proper equipment. It would be wise of me to not fight in such a chaotic area right now. However, as I duck some of the wall beneath my feet begin to crumble. Being tackled by the monster my own knees begin to buckle, and I too began to fall over the walls of our settlement.

Landing with a thud, seeing Philly go over, Mandy screams were the last thing I heard.. then darkness. I remember a time when life was simpler, and I hear something echoing in my head. What is that? I ask myself is that  laughter? the laughter of my parents echoed in the darkness. They always laughed and then smiled at me. Something I will never get to see again. I feel cold, like I am drifting in the ocean. Saves slowly hitting my face...
