After Everything Has Changed

Chapter 1

"(Y/Full/N), will you marry me?" You couldn't believe you were hearing this. Your boyfriend of 4 months, Dr Leonard "Bones" McCoy, just proposed to you. You had just told him you were pregnant, and right then and there, in the waiting room of the hospital, he got down on one knee, pulled out a ring, and asked. Tears welled up in your eyes and you shook your head yes, saying "Of course I will."

He got up off the ground, slipped the ring onto your finger, and mumbled "I love you." right before he kissed you. When he pulled away, he knelt down and kissed your stomach where your first child was growing, and said "And daddy loves you." You giggled and said "Come on, I was sent down to have prescriptions filled." He grabbed your hand and walked you down to where a doctor was waiting for you.

You were getting up off the couch when Bones noticed you, ran over, and helped you up. "You've got to be careful." he said. "Leonard, I love you, but you have to stop worrying. I've been pregnant a week and the whole time you have been treating me like I'm glass. There is nothing I can do that will hurt me or the baby. And my ribs have healed so don't use that as an excuse either." you said. He was going to say something but you cut him off with a kiss. No more arguments from him.

You went to the kitchen and found some ice cream and a can of whipped cream. You also found sprinkles and chocolate syrup. You threw everything into a bowl and grabbed a spoon. You walked past Bones and sat down on the couch. You were about to take a bite when Bones took the spoon and shoved an apple into your mouth. "Hey." you whined. "An apple a day keeps the doctors away." he replied. Then he stopped dead in his talks and said, "Well, not this one, at least." He went out into the hall and walked down to Captain Kirk's room. You got up and looked down the hall at Bones giving Kirk your ice cream. Bones walked back down towards you, grabbed you by the waist, and kissed you. "I have to go to work. Call me if anything happens. Kirk might check on you, I asked him too." he said."Okay, bye." you said and watched him walk down to the Medbay.

You were sleeping on the couch when you were woken by a knock on the door. "Who is it?" you yelled. "It's Nyota." you heard from the other side. "Come in." you said, not wanting to get up. You saw her open the door and walk in. "Hey. What's up?" you asked her as she sat down beside you and hugged her. "Nothing new. Other than Spock and I started dating." she said, looking down and the floor and looking back up at you with a huge grin on your face. "No way? Seriously? I knew you had a crush on him. When did you ask him?" you asked, wanting to know. Her smile got bigger and she said "I asked him a week ago." She was about to go on when her communicator beeped. She answered it and said "I'm so sorry, but I have to go." You got up and said "Okay." She yelled a final "See ya!" as she ran out the door.

As you walked out of the Medbay, your communicator beeped. You flipped it open and said "Lieutenant (Y/L/N) here, go ahead." The woman on the other end said "Lieutenant (Y/L/N), due to your prior medical training and the absence of medical students this year, Starfleet has requested that you further your medical training to become an RN and serve abord the Enterprise. Your response is required by Saturday to process the necessary paperwork by the beginning of the next semester. We await your response." she finished and you hung up.

You couldn't believe what you were hearing. Prior medical training? How did they find out? Oh, of course. Your little stunt on the Enterprise, running around Medbay treating injured crewmen. Great. One more thing to do. You continued walking to the store, thinking about whether or not to further your medical training. It would be good if you were going to have a child. But Bones would be there. But he wouldn't always be home, he does have to go work. He's only in the Medbay, not too far away. You kept coming up with reasons to join and not to join. This was going to be a long day.

Finally, after going through the store and getting everything you needed, you decided to enroll as a nurse. When you got back to Bones's apartment, you called the woman back and said you would join. She said the schedule would be sent and you also requested a larger uniform, knowing you would need it after a while. You looked down at your stomach, then at your toes. You knew you wouldn't be able to see them in a few months. After putting everything in the fridge, you sat down on the couch and turned the T.V. on. Then you remembered Bones wanted apple pie. You looked through all his recipes and finally found one that looked old and worn. You guessed it was passed down to him. You gathered everything you needed and started making it. You finished after about an hour of doing stuff, put it in the oven, and sat on the couch. You managed to stay up long enough to get it out of the oven and add the finishing touches. It looked really good. Then you laid down on the couch and fell asleep.

You woke up to the sound of the door closing and footsteps coming towards you. You open your eyes and see Bones sit down next to you. You reach over and grab his hand, saying "How was your day?" "Okay." he said, closing his eyes and leaning his head back. You gave it a minute before he asks "Is that apple pie I smell?" and looked up and around. You smiled and got up, going to the freezer for a tub of ice cream you bought at the store. "Yes it is. You want some?" you asked getting two plate and two forks. "I would love some." he said, smiling bigger than you had ever seen. You cut a big slice for him and put ice cream on the side. You cut yourself a smaller piece and made up for the size difference in ice cream. You walked over to him and handed Bones his plate, sitting down next to him. You and him sat there for two hours watching a movie and eating apple pie and ice cream. You eventually got tired of getting up and down, so you brought the whole pie and tub of ice cream over to the couch and ending up eating that for dinner.

You woke up on the couch, your head resting on Bones's shoulder and his arm wrapped protectively around your midsection. You slid out from under his arm, going to the bathroom to get ready for bed. You brushed your teeth and changed into PJs. Walking back out to the living room, you grabbed a pillow and threw it at Bones's head. It hit him and he barely moved, groaning about it being too early. You grabbed another one and hit him in the exact same spot. That did it. He picked his head up and looked around. He finally spotted you and groggily asked something about the time. "Late. Now, get your butt moving. I'm tired." you replied. He stood and followed you, retreating into the bathroom as you burrowed under the blankets. He came out a few minutes later in PJ pants and got under the blankets beside you. He wrapped his arm around you, burying his head in the crook of your neck. "I love you, (Y/N)." he mumbled against the exposed skin. You turned your head enough to give him a kiss on the forehead, then retuned to your prior position, closing you eyes and waiting for sleep to claim you once again.
