It was a night about as boring as you can get. It was overcast with a small drizzle. Sergio was walking home from his shot job at a run down bar called Cupid's. It was a sleazy joint, right next to a "love hotel". If you could even call it that. Sergio sighed and started doing his homework as he walked. Algebra II, biology, and Latin 101. He was in his last year of high school and was going to graduate at 16. Legally, he shouldn't be anywhere near a bar, much less serving people, but this was Ironbrook. This town didn't give a fuck about what happens to the occupants unfortunate enough to live here. Sergio liked his job, however. Not because it was fun or because he had friends there, he didn't have friends. No, he liked his job because it meant he didn't have to be in that hell hole of a foster home. The smell of booze and sweat was one he was familiar with. His foster "mom" was a bitch. In the few years he'd lived with her he'd seen her cheat on and poision her husband. She actually planned it out so it would seem like a simple case of overdose. The guy she was dating now was a total douchebag, younger, richer, and one hundred percent a dick. Cathleen was smart, but she was also a alchoholic with a violent temper. The only thing that kept Sergio from packing up and leaving the abuse behind was Nikki, his 8-year old sister who is also a foster. She was strong and willing, but a voice in the back of Sergios' head always threw the curveball, "What if you can't take care of Nikki?" And he couldn't even think about leaving her alone, they were a team. Speaking of Nikki, what was she doing out in the cold, crying? "Hey Nik, what's the matter?" Sergio asked, concerned. Nikki looked up, then quickly covered her face. Too late. Sergio spotted a nice big shiner over her left eye. He grabed her arms and gently as he could, pulled them away. She hissed in pain. He rolled up the long sleeves of her tattered light blue shirt. Fag burns littered her arms. "Who did this to you?" He growled. Nikki sighed. "Cathy and Dave just got a little too lose, that's all." Nikki explained. Sergio lifted her up bridal style and carried her into the kitchen. He took out a knife and the first aid kit. He ran the dull edge of the knife over the burns to get rid of the ash in the wounds. Nikki wimpered in agony. After he was done with her arms he fished out a bag of frozen brocoili and a bag of frozen peas out of the frezer. Nikki grabed the milk, butter, chicken, and box meal. Nikki put some of the vegetables in the skillet, put the brocoili away and put the frozen peas over her black eye. Sergio finished making supper and they both sat at the table, eating in silence. When they finished, they went up to bed quietly, as to not wake up Cathy and Dave. The room was basically a closet with a tiny dresser, a desk and a matteress shoved in. "Hey... Sergio?" "Yeah Nikki?" "Will tomorrow be a better day?" "Hopefully Nikki." "Is hope all we have left?" "Go to sleep, Nikki. You'll have to find out for yourself."
