Dear Diary,
I woke up with dribble patterns on the canvas of my cheek. Ew. I checked for the time on my iPhone. It was 06:00am, just enough time for me to get ready. I rolled out off bed and landed in the splits on the ground.
*Diary, let me tell you that it woke me up right away...*
A groan escaped my mouth as I got out of the uncomfortable position. I crawled over to the mirror to assess the damage. My eyebrows were a bushy mess, my eyelashes had decided to have a get together and had interlocked themselves. I rolled over to the door and just as I got to the door it was propelled into my face.
"Arghh!" I screamed as searing pains flew up my nose. My mum peaked from behind the door at my sprawled body on the floor.
"Honey, how many times did I tell you not to roll and crawl all over your room? Look at your face now." She bent down in front of my flaming face and inspected it closely. "You'll be fine, Vix. Get ready for school and stop messing about." I could hear her light footsteps as she walked towards the kitchen. My mum has the body of a model, size 8 with long ebony legs and long kinky black hair. I rubbed my nose vigorously as I got up from the ground.
*Can you believe, Diary, that my own mother would smack me in the face with a door and not apologise?! Anyway, back to the story...*
I washed up and returned to my room to get dressed.
* I had put together the most perfect ensemble ever! - prolonged silence - okay it wasn't the best but that's only a minor detail. *
I pulled out my daisy print a-line mini skirt, a maroon jumper with my favourite black boots. After changing, rather slowly, I tripped down the corridor - on purpose - and entered my favourite room of the apartment. The kitchen. My mum had made herself breakfast and I couldn't see any extra plates of food set out for me.
"Mum, where's the breakfast?" I asked walking towards her with only one intention.
"You can make your own. Just because you've started a new school doesn't mean I'll suddenly make you breakfast." She rolled her eyes and continued munching on her French Toast.
* This was it Diary. The moment my life changed forever.*
I lunged for the plate of French Toast. She was too fast for me and swiped the plate away from my grasp. So close yet so far away... I only then realised that gravity wasn't working in my favour as I saw the tiles of the clean floor approaching fast. Oh bum. I lay sprawled on the floor dreaming of what could've been mine. It smelled so good as well! I slowly brought myself up from my old friend, the floor. My mum was laughing so hard tears rolled down her cheeks.
"It's not funny mum!" I whined walking away from the kitchen with an empty stomach. I grabbed my bag and returned to the kitchen.
"I'm running away and never coming back." I whispered loudly.
"Just make sure you end up at school in one piece, Hun!" My mum laughed, knowing I wouldn't have it in me to run away. I walked out of our apartment and took the lift downstairs. We lived in a modern block of apartments in London. Skyscrapers towered above me as I stepped out onto the pavement. Everyone was bustling to get to the train station and bus stops and I still hadn't eaten breakfast. It was then that I started my mission to get to my ideal destination. No, it wasn't school, it was the cute coffee shop across the way. My heart pumped faster as I finessed my way through busy adults, noisy kids and anti-social teenagers to get to my heaven on earth, for the moment. As I entered the coffee shop I was embraced by heat and the smell of coffee. A smile lit up my face as I strutted, yes strutted, to the counter.
"Hi, how can I help you?" The Italian women asked kindly.
"Why so formal Aunty Rosa? You know exactly how to help a hopeless Vix." I chuckled slapping down a five pound note, which was in fact my lunch money, but no one needs to know that...
"You tried to steal Dianne's food again? Don't you ever learn your lesson?" She looked at me shaking her head as if I were a young stubborn child.
"Hey, they say you should never give up on your dreams!" I defended myself as she chuckled softly.
"I'll get you a muffin and some coffee?" She raised a perfect eyebrow.
"You know me so well Aunty Rosa." I winked as she disappeared into the kitchen to prepare my order. I adjusted my hat as I waited, my kinky curls peaking from underneath. Aunty Rosa returned with my order and I thanked her profusely as I kissed her on the cheek. I took a long sip of the coffee before bidding my goodbyes and entering the pavement jungle. I walked to my bus stop and waited for my bus whilst destroying the beautiful muffin Aunty Rosa had blessed me with. The bus finally came and my journey was long and boring. I really should have listened to my mum and taken a cab. I walked towards the entrance of Duke Barns Prep.
* Yes, I had somehow made my way into a private school, it also helped that my mum could afford the costs because she was CEO of DiNoré Clothing. *
Zion T. blared in my ears giving me the confidence to enter Duke Barns. The grounds looked like a typical American college campus you saw in movies. There were cafés and vending machines scattered as far as my eyes could see. A grand building towered over me which I assumed was the main building of the school. I gripped my backpack tighter as I climbed the cream stairs. The doors automatically moved at my presence as if I were a Queen. I soon realised it probably wasn't gracing my royalty but the girl who had pushed past me and into the crowded hall of the building. Her brunette hair cascaded down her back in perfect curls bouncing at any movement she made. She was wearing Louis Vuitton pumps, bleached denim jeans, a peach tank top and a white blazer. My outfit compared to hers was a complete failure, a futile attempt. She didn't bother to apologise as she continued strutting down the hall, head held high as if this was her kingdom and we were all her subjects. I adjusted my skirt as I approached the front desk before whipping out my EarPods.
"Welcome to Duke Barns Prep! I'm assuming you're a new student, what's your name?" The young lady asked smiling brightly at me.
"Hi, my name is Victoria Noré."
* I know I said my name was Vix, which it still is, my full name is indeed Victoria. I prefer Vix though. *
She searched my name and handed me a timetable, planner and a map.
"Have a memorable time at Duke Barns Victoria!" The lady, who's name I learned was actually Ms. Flora, kindly spoke. I smiled before walking away from the desk. Third challenge of the day: finding my homeroom. I looked hopelessly at the different staircases and the seemingly endless hall. This was going to be a real challenge that's for sure.
"Hi, are you new here?" I turned around to find a blonde girl with bright green eyes peering at me as if I were an insect under a magnifying glass.
"Yes, I just joined a second ago, literally." I chuckled a bit at myself.
"Well I'm Lindsey Donav." She introduced formally, whilst scanning my outfit from head to toe. "And you are?"
"Vix Noré." Her eyes narrowed slightly as if she was sizing me up as a threat.
"As in Dianne Noré?" She asked curiously.
"Last time I checked my mother was Dianne Noré." I took off my hat and ruffled my hair softly.
"Well if you want to sit with us at lunch, you can try your best to fit in with our cliche." With that she flipped her hair and strutted the way the "Queen" had gone. I continued my mission of finding someone I thought would be nice enough to show me where my homeroom was.
"Hi I'm-"
"All pleasantries aside, could you show me where Homeroom 2 is please?" I interrupted the girl before she could continue. Her black hair was piled in a stylish bun on top of her head, her face was shielded with neutral makeup and she was dressed in Calvin Klein jeans, a white tube top and sandals.
"I'm guessing you're new." She tilted her head with a smirk.
"You've hit the nail on the head, but I still need to get to Homeroom 2." I cut to the chase fearing being late.
"Well you're just in luck because I was just heading to Homeroom 2 myself. I'm Carmen Singh, nice to meet you." She held out her hand for me to shake which I high fived and asked her to lead the way. As we entered the room all eyes were on Carmen leaving my presence undetected for the time being. People shouted greetings to Carmen asking how her summer had been. It all went a little bit like this:
"Carmen! Oh my gosh, I legit missed you so much!"
"Car, how was Dubai!?"
"When's the next party Carmen?"
"Carrrrmeeeeen, I can't believe you left me for Dubai!" The last one was Lindsey Donav just before she hugged Carmen and air kissed her.
"I was so bored without you!" Carmen gushed to Lindsey as they both forgot about my existence and continued their conversation. I picked a random seat in the middle of the classroom hoping I wasn't stealing anyone's seat. A tall tanned woman entered the room and everyone sat in random seats.
"Hello everyone! I, Miss Bao, am you tutor for the fourth year running!" She clapped for herself before settling behind her desk. "It's the first day back and we have a new student called Vict-"
"It's actually just Vix Norè." I finished before she could say my full name.
"Vix Noré is new so please welcome her with open arms." She smiled sweetly before announcing we could talk or whatever. I turned to the person beside me. The girl had gray hair and wore big round glasses.
"Hi, I'm Vix, nice to meet you." I introduced myself politely.
"I'm Jessi." She smiled slightly whilst pulling up her hair. She wore a denim pinafore with a green turtle neck. "What school did you come from?" She turned to face me. I thought for a moment before deciding that it wouldn't matter who I told.
"I was actually homeschooled before." She looked as though she had seen a ghost.
"Homeschooling! Wow, I feel for you, the last time any of us were homeschooled we were 12. That's fine though." She was cut off by the bell. I looked at my timetable and saw that I had Textiles first. Ugh. I'm certain my mum chose that for me; you see Diary, she wants me to follow in her footsteps in the fashion industry.
- Skip classes until lunch because there is really no point to be honest -
Before lunch I had English Literature with Carmen.
"Why don't you come to Starbucks and have lunch with us?" She asked hooking her arm in mine.
"Uh, why not?" I smiled as we walked towards the Starbucks. As we entered the whole café seemed to stare. "Do they usually stare or is it just a one off?" I asked chuckling nervously.
"Of course they stare, I am literally the princess of Duke Barns." She laughed at my confused look.
"Okay..." I gave her a once over to check that her brain wasn't falling out of her ear. She didn't know how petty and childish she sounded, but who am I to judge right? She led me to the biggest table in the middle of the room. Five girls sat around the table including the "Queen" from before and Lindsey Donav.
"Carmen!" Squealed all the girls at once as the gracefully hugged her whilst pushing me out of the way.
"Girls, girls, let me introduce you to Vix Noré, the newest Jewel of Duke Barns!" They all clapped except for the "Queen" who was eyeing me like a piece of meat.
"Dianne Noré?" Was all she asked nonchalantly.
"I think so", I answered, lazily scanning the café.
"I'm disappointed by the fact her offspring is bigger than a size 6." Her eyes shot daggers so sharp, I could feel it prodding my heart. Everyone at the table became silent watching the lioness messing with her prey just before she was about to ponce. Their eyes slid over to me as a cold smile exposed her pearly whites.
"Oh dear, what an awkward situation."
